Best Parks for Children (and other activities)

We'll be visiting SF, from Atlanta, the week of April 7th. We are renting a flat. We have two children, ages 8 and 6. I use to live in SF - 15 years ago (attended SFSU). I'd like to get some suggestions on the best parks for kids.

I know all that Golden Gate Park has to offer - I was looking more at the smaller neighborhood parks. I was also looking for some other activities I may be forgetting about (outside of the obvious - wharf, cable cars, etc. Any new Museums or exhibits - etc.

I am so excited to share this great city with my kids.

We will have a car and plan on doing some daytrips as well.

Thanks,

Heidi

The exploritorium is the best for kids and adults. A totally hands on well done science museum.

Hello fellow Gater!

Exploratorium is a MUST.

How about the Randall Museum in Corona Heights. Great views and trail up there as well.

Maybe a trip to the Wave Organ (Free)

You must check out Crissy Field, much changed since you last lived here.

Get them out on a ferry to Sausalito, or a Bay Cruise, or Alcatraz, or Angel Island, or.........

How about exploring the ruins of Sutro Bath and a hike along Land's End Trail (free)

Cable Car Museum (free)

Hyde St Pier and its ships

Go to Mt Tam, Stinson Beach, the Redwoods.

I think that you are going to have more fun than they do.

There is the Children's Discovery Museum in Sausalito right across the Golden Gate Bridge. My kids love it there.

Here is also the Go City Kid's website that lists family activies throughout the Bay Area. Just click select the the events calendar.

Thanks everyone - you all gave some great ideas - many are jogging my memory and many are new which is great. The last time I was in SF was actually 5 years ago. My husband and I are actually more excited than our children - who don't know what to be excited about!

If you want neighborhood parks, it would help to know the location of your flat that you are renting.

Zeum is the name of the children's activity arts & technology museum at Yerba Buena Gardens downtown, and there is a carousel there. Here are pics of the carousel:

We're staying on Nob Hill - around Hyde and Jackson. We will have a car and, although its been awhile I'm still fairly familiar with the muni system. As for area I'm familiar with - I use to live in Laurel Heights, near UCSF and near SFSU.

Thanks again for all the suggestions - I'm making a list of them to share with my family.

Huntington Park's little playground is very nice but I suspect the older child might not like it.

Boedekker Park also has very nice facilities.

If you go to the Exploratorium, get there when the doors open, nothing else planned before dinner, as it's a very difficult place to leave.

They may be at the age where discovering the many stairs and lanes of San Francisco would be an adventure -- as long as they can Muni it close enough to enjoy it.

In adjacent Russian Hill you have Macondray Lane, the Ina Coolbrith Park, and I think it worthwhile to Muni it over to the Greenwich and Filbert streets steps to Telegraph Hill and Coit Tower. They can look for (and listen for) the famed parrots of Telegraph Hill. Of course, you can skip the hill climbing if the young 'uns aren't up for it and just go to Clay and Drumm streets (near the Embarcadero buildings in the park-like area) and see them at 5 p.m. ish. There's a whole set of parrot obsessives there. People feed them and you're not supposed to feed them, so, be advised. Plus, they are wild birds, so as much as your kids might be tempted to want to feed them, remember they have sharp beaks and talons.
