Planning to go to California

I would be very grateful if anyone could give me any tips!

We are planning a 3 week trip to California this Summer with our 3 children who are 14,11 and 5.

I was just wondering what places people would reccommend that we see,and also if anyone has any advice on the best place to get the cheapest flights for the 5 of us? Also if anyone has any advice on car hire I would be grateful?

Do you also think it would be possible to get accommodation as we go or do you think it should all be booked up beforehand?

Any help, and I would be very grateful!

I am hoping to see some cities, some scenery and some beaches!!!

Thanks in advance!

You have to go to Yosemite, one of the most amazing and beautiful spots on the planet. Accommodations should be reserved as early as possible. 2-3 days should be enough. If you don't like to do any hiking/walking then subtract a day.

It's risky to get accommodations "as you go" in the populated and/or touristy areas Rural off the beaten path and you can usually always find something.

Other places outside of SF to see are:

Lake Tahoe (4 hr drive from SF)

Monterey/Carmel/Big Sur - plenty of beautiful coastline to see around those parts (2 hr drive from SF)

Many will say Napa, I'm not a fan, doubtful the kids will enjoy that.

In SF, make sure you take the kids to the Exploratorium, a kind of hands on museum.

Hi, I would suggest that you buy a couple of guidebooks as soon as you can, as these will give you a very good overview of the state, plus lots of info about lodging, attractions, airfare etc. This might quickly get you started:

Some ideas on guidebooks:

http://www.frommers.com/

With a book or two, the whole family can help with planning and gathering ideas :-)

As far as booking ahead, California is a very, very popular tourist destination, particularly in the summer, so I would suggest trying to make as many reservations as possible. To stay inside any National Parks (Yosemite), you may already be too late to find accomodations.

San Francisco, Yosemite, San Diego, L.A...I visited all these places last year and had a blast. Your kids will love San Diego (SeaWorld and the zoo) and also Universal Studios in Hollywood.

I always find the cheapest flights on Delta's official website. Try travelsupermarket and kayak, they'll help you find the cheapest deals.
