Advice on how safe San Fran is with two young children

Hi

We are visiting San Fransisco for 5 days from this Thursday, staying in Fishermans Wharf area, how safe is it at day and night with a 4 and 6 year old, wanting to visit China town, little Italy etc & the usual tourist places before we head up Bodega bay and Napa for the other 9 days

Many thanks for any help

We've visited San Francisco twice with our kids. The first time they for 7 & 3 the second time 9, 5 & 18 mo. We've stayed at the Tuscan Inn at Fishermans Wharf and at the Columbus Motor Inn. Both times we walked everywhere and used public transport and never felt unsafe. Be sure to spend a day at the Exploritorium and the Fire Engine Tour was a definite favorite of the kids as well as the Fortune Cookie Factory on Ross Alley in Chinatown.

er, what? Not sure what you are expecting, but of course it's safe. Fisherman's Wharf, Chinatown, North Beach (Little Italy), and even Union Square are perfectly fine. Day or night, for kids or adults.

9 days in Bodega Bay and Napa? Seems like a bit much. Why not go to Yosemite?

Thousands of parents live in San Francisco with young kids. You'll find it perfectly safe; in fact, probably safer than it is for the average family since you'll be mostly in heavily traveled areas or sites frequented by visitors.

Probably the biggest hazard to most visitors here is traffic. The average life expectancy for pedestrians here is about 11 days. So keep an eye and a grip on your kids at all times, watch for red-light runners, drivers who turn into the path of peds, and bicyclists and skaters/skareboarders who don't realize that people do walk on the sidewalks now and then. And be careful around transit vehicles, because there are a lot of blind spots for the driver.

ashdown28, Manchester asked: «how safe is it»

Neither safer nor more dangerous than Manchester.

One of the activites I do now in my retirement is to help foreign students practice English. From speaking to them I have come to understand how the rest of the world views us here in the USA. It is amazing to me how everyone out there worries about safety while visiting or living in USA cities!!!

What you see on TV is NOT what happens every day here! You and your children will have the same dangers here as you face at home. Keep a normal watch as you go about your time vacationing and try to have a good time!!!Millions of American families will be doing the same and hopefully for all of us we will be OK.

I'd worry about asking where the playgrounds and merry go round rides are for your tots.

Main thing is to walk for a fresh green light before you cross the street and don't stand too close to the corner, when cars or trucks are making a right turn in front of you.
