Brew Pub or Micro Brewery

I am looking for true beer lovers. I am looking for a brew pub or a micro brewery in San Fransisco area. Wouldn't mind a tour, but if not its ok just to taste the beer. We both love to try good beer almost as much as a great wine. I went on line and actually found several options, but would like some of you to recommend a few. "anyone"?

If you want to do a tour you have to check out Anchor Brewing Company. They do one a day I believe so you have to book in advance.

In San Francisco, some of my favorites in this order are.

21st Amendment

Magnolia Pub & Brewery

Beach Chalet

Thirsty Bear

Gordon Biersch

In Marin:

Marin Brewing Company (you can take the ferry there)

Moylan's

Broken Drum

If you are headed to the Sonoma Wine Country

you have to stop in Santa Rosa for:

Russian River Brewing Company

Third Street Ale Works

In Healdsburg for the HOPPY stuff: Bear Republic Brewery.

You can find links to each for more information

Now, if you are a true beer lover you have to make a stop at the Tornado. Check out their current beer list. You may not have to leave the Haight.

Not a brew pub and too big to qualify as a microbrewery (although the daily output from somebody like Annheiser Busch probably exceeds their annual production), but heavy in San Francisco history and context is the Anchor Brewery, producer of Anchor Steam beer and several other nectars of the gods. They offer a single, hotly booked daily tour, information for which can be found at www.anchorbrewing.com/about_us/tourinfo.htm

Thanks for all the info. some of these I have looked into, and some I have not found yet. So thanks. If anyone else has favorites speak up. What about Wunder brewery. anyone? We will only be in San Fransisco for 5 nights total, 4 in Moss beach, 4 in Calistoga.

We will for sure check out a few while in the wine country. We will be driving to Russian river area, Heldsburg at least one day. Thank you again

Anchor is a must visit for beer fans........been there twice. You can book as far out as three months. They won't take reservations any farther out than that. This is a very popular tour, so plan accordingly. The tours do fill up quickly.

Thanks

If we were to do the Anchor tour, when should we do it. For location. We are staying at Fishermans wharf area, then Calistoga at the north end of Napa Valley, then at Moss Beach (near Half Moon Bay: I think there is a brewery there also??) then back to San Fransisco at La Meridian. Which part of the trip is the Anchor brewery closer to. We will have a car in Napa and Moss Beach.

As both of your out of San Francisco stays are pretty far out of San Francisco, the obvious time to make a visit to the Anchor Steam Brewery is while you're in San Francisco, particularly since the visit will involve consumption of admittedly small quantities of alcohol.

In the Moss Beach area there's the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company, slightly south of Half Moon Bay in an area (I don't think it's a formal town) called Princeton-by-the-Sea. http://www.hmbbrewingco.com/index.php

There's also the Moss Beach Distillery which isn't either a brewpub nor a distillery but rather a restaurant with a nice ocean view and open deck. The name came from the location's history as a rumrunner dropoff and speakeasy (Frank's Place) during the prohibition with the additional claim to fame of having a ghost on site.

Yes it will be one of the stays while in San Fransisco.

Do you know anything about the Wunder Brewery. I am not sure it is even open.
