Crossing Bay Bridge without a car?

I've heard that for those of us without cars, there are bike taxis of some sort that take people across the Bay Bridge during peak hours. Is this true, and if so, how does it work?

First off, are you talking about the Oakland Bay Bridge or the Golden Gate Bridge?

No pedestrain traffic is allowed on the Bay Bridge, you may walk or bike across the Golden Gate.

There are bus services across both bridges and BART goes under the bay from SF to Oakland and points East.

Not sure what you mean by "bike taxis."

I've never seen or heard of anything like a bike taxi on the Bay Bridge. That would be really dangerous, as there's hardly enough room for cars on the bridge as it is.

You can take bikes on BART but not during peak hours.

There are three ways to get "across" the Bay Bridge without driving. There is BART, of course. Bikes are allowed on BART during non-peak hours.

The second option is the AC Transit Transbay bus. The buses operate frequently from all over the East Bay and can accommodate 2 bicycles on a rack on the front of each bus. More information: http://www.actransit.org

The third option, which may be what you are inquiring about, is the Caltrans bicycle shuttle. The Caltrans bike shuttle operates during peak periods between Oakland's MacArthur BART Station and San Francisco's Transbay Terminal (near Montgomery BART Station). This compensates for the fact that BART doesn't allow bike during this time and that there is no way to bike across. More information: http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist4/shuttle.htm

Not to be snarky but here's a quote from Wikipedia:

" The San FranciscoOakland Bay Bridge (legally the The James "Sunny Jim" Rolph Bridge and known locally as the Bay Bridge) "

So we were both wrong but, and perhaps more importantly, I think people know what we're talking about.

Here are the details on the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge bicycle shuttle from the Caltrans District 4 web page:

http://www.dot.ca.gov/dist4/shuttle.htm

Basically it costs $1.00 USD each way and you ride in an orange van with your bicycle on a trailer behind you. The pickup points are at the MacArthur BART station and the Transbay Terminal in San Francisco, with a stop on Treasure Island in the middle of the bridge.

The cable cars do not go to the Golden Gate Bridge.

Hers is a map showing the routes of the three cable car lines.

I think by using the expression "bike taxis" Lady Amanita was not referring to transporting a bike across the bridge, but referring to one of those contraptions like a bicycle powered "rickshaw".

I don't know if San Francisco has any of those, but I do not believe they go over the Golden Gate Bridge, and certainly not of the Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge.
