Family of 5 visiting

We're from Australia and staying 5 days in SF. Looking for family accom? What about the Grosvenor Suites or Hotel Union Square. Can't find any 2 bed suites or really even many hotels without booking 2 rooms. Aussie $ still at 68cents so 2 rooms get very pricey.Coming in February so do we need to book Alcatraz tour? I gather bike riding over Golden Gate Bridge doesn't need advanced booking.Thankyou for help.

I think Grosvenor Suites would be your best bet.

It gets good reviews all the time and it's not such a bad location.

The city does not have lots of suite accommodation apart from rather expensive ones.

Yes you will need to prebook Alcatraz and only on

www.alcatrazcruises.com

You do not need to prebook bikes.

How old are the kids ?

Thanks for reply. Have just been checking out reviews for Grosvenor and they don't seem that good. Location is okay but rooms are tired and no airconditioning which could be a problem if we arrive in 4 weeks. Hotel Union Square reviews say rooms can be tiny and there's no wardrobes. Maybe all the happy customers don't tend to post reviews.

Do you really want a hotel with air conditioning? In San Francisco? In February?

Also look at the family suites at Columbus Motor Inn. It is one large bedroom with two double beds and a table and chairs - plenty of room, no door, a bedroom with a queen bed (and a door that closes) and one bathroom. It worked great for our family. Not too expensive, no frills or thrills - but clean and good location. Only a couple of block to the Cable cars and trolleys, right across the street for the bus that takes you to the Exploritorium and easy walking to the wharf, cannery and Pier 39.

You do not need air conditioning in San Francisco, believe me. In February you will need heat.

Grosvenor Suites is better than Hotel Union Square, and the location is central.

Cow Hollow Motor Inn and Suites would probably work for you, but it is in the Marina District, not within walking distance of spots you might want to visit. However, public transportation in San Francisco is excellent.

I just noticed the recommendation for Columbus Motor Inn. Yes, look into that. You can walk to Fisherman's Wharf from there. It is on a tree-lined street with several good breakfast places within a few blocks.

We're a family of five from Sydney (kids 16, 13 & 11) and stayed at the Grosvenor recently in a one bedroom suite with two Queen beds and a sofa bed in the loungeroom. Although the room was dated it was clean and suited our needs as we were out most of the day sightseeing. The bathroom was tiny but functional and there was a small kitchenette with full size fridge, oven, hotplates and mcrowave. The hotel is well located between Union Square and Fishermans Wharf and if you book on-line you get a $20 rebate per night on the advertised rate. The complimentary continental breakfast is excellent and overall the hotel is good value.

You'll need to book your Alcatraz tour at least 3-4 days in advance. (see www.alcatrazcruises.com )

You can hire a bike at any time from a number of locations.

Be careful when booking cable car tickets. We bought five 7 day passes @ $24 each thinking that this would be good value similar to a New York subway weekly pass. The problem was that the cable cars were very crowded most of the time and it was near impossible to get five people on at once. Consequently we had to split up to get on if space was available or just walk! That said February may be a quieter time than Christmas.

Enjoy your trip.

Hi,

You don't need airconditioning at any time of the year in San Francisco.

I haven't looked at reviews but there has been lots of peopler like jogeba on the Forum in recent months who have had a positive experience at Grosvenor Suites.

jogeba also brings up a good point with MUNI passes and it has been mentioned here many times that the passes are only really good value if you plan to use the Cable Cars a lot. The Cable Car ride for one trip is $5 _____no transfers but the buses / streetcars are only $1-50 and you can also get a transfer.

Thanks for all the comments. With airconditioning I mean heating and not cooling. In Australia the ac serves as both.
