San Fran with kids?

I am travelling from Australia to the US in May with my husband and 3 boys (13, 9 and 6). we will end our trip in San Francisco. Any tips of kid friendly things to do.

Thanks :)

For sure.

Here is Number One....

http://www.exploratorium.edu/

You will not be able to get your kids out of here, maybe you, either.

In Golden Gate park, this is newly opened and very classy. The kids would love the penguins and etc.

It may be expensive. I haven't been there yet.

If you go there, as long as you are in Golden Gate Park, how about a boat ride on Stow Lake?

Then there is Pier 39 in Fisherman's Wharf. I don't like it....it's over the top touristy, but kids do and I think there are sea lions around.

And then there is the zoo, of course.

Have fun.

Definitely the Exploratorium. You could also rent bikes at Fisherman's Wharf and ride to the Exploratorium and then out along Crissy Field to the Golden Gate Bridge. It's a very easy, off street ride.

I haven't been to the Academy yet either (except on my plate I'm not into fish) but I've heard they've done a great job with it. It is expensive ($25 per adult, $17 or so for kids). Some people have told me that weekday afternoons are the best time. Perhap by May the crowds will have dispersed some.

Across the concourse from the Academy is the DeYoung museum. Free of charge are the 9th floor observation deck and the sculpture garden. There is an interesting skyscape in the garden.

The Randall Museum is excellent for kids: http://www.randallmuseum.org/

Also, just over the GG Bridge in Sausalito is the Discovery museum: www.baykidsmuseum.org

Tours are available of AT&T park -- our lovely baseball park: …mlb.com/sf/ballpark/tours.jsp

Don't forget about the Metreon, the mecca for video gamers. Also movie theaters and other shops.

The boys will probably like Alcatraz. They might also enjoy the old ships at Hyde St. Pier or the SS Jeremiah O'Brien, a WWII Liberty Ship berthed at Fishermans Wharf.

The Musee Mechanique is right next to the Jeremiah O'Brien. It has a great collection of antique and not so antique games and amusements. It's more unique, fun and much cheaper than the arcades at Pier 39 or the Metreon.

I'll second Alcatraz, and suggest that if you have not picked these up already, you might want to check out the following books:

Eyewitness travel: San Francisco

San Francisco for dummies

Both have some great ideas for travelling with kids.

I believe somebody also puts out a travel guide for SF specifically for those with kids as well.

We were in San Fran last Sept with our boys aged 10 and 13. They both loved the self guided night tour of Alcatraz. If you decide to do this you should book before you leave Aust.

They also loved the baseball match at AT&T Park.
