Intl. Hostel at Fort Mason

We are planning to stay at the Hostel at Fort Mason and wondered if anyone has had the experience? We are two seniors and we want to experience the City of San Francisco on a personal level not as high class. We will be only 2 nights and we will be out most of the time so Hostel sounded like a way to get a clean safe place to sleep without spending a weeks pay. I have a quote of $80 a night for the private room for two. Does that sound good or are there hotels in Fishermans Wharf area that charge the same?

This hostel is wonderful. The rooms are a little dated but very clean.

The area is safe outside. The building is within the fort. I felt very comfortable inside the fort and the area around the fort during the day and night.

One caution the area outside the fort is not well light.

The bathrooms are shared but you rarely see anyone. Ask if the rooms for the disabled are available. If they are then you will only have your room and one other room to share one bathroom. Plus you and the other room will get a private kitchen. They really don't want you cooking (if you are not disabled) but they don't say anything if you want to use the refrigerator or heat something up in the microwave.

There are lots of young people but everyone is very nice. But there are people there of all ages. Everyone is very friendly and it is a great way to get to meet new people.

There is a bus, a few blocks from the front door that will take you into the city. If I remember correctly, there is a stop to Fisherman's wharf.

The hostel sets back pretty far so you probably won't have a view from the room but a short walk down the driveway rewards you with an incredible view of Alcatraz the the Golden Gate.

Speaking of the walk. The walk to Fishermans Wharf is only about 15 minutes but it is a difficult one. Going to FH is not so bad as it is downhill but coming back can be a difficult one. If you are in fairly decent shape, you should have no problem.

The one downside is breakfast. It is pretty poor. You get one waffle or one bagel and one glass of OJ and a cup of coffee.
