San Jose/San Francisco in late June

my daughter has a gymnastics meet in San Jose and we will be there June 23 - 28. Am debating bringing the whole family.

If we bring kids ages 8-17 yrs, what is in the area we can do with them? I'm assuming we'll rent a car.

Hopefully we will get a whole day free and was thinking of driving into SF as I've never been - is this a good idea? if you have only one day, what would you do?

If we get another day free or half day free, where else should we go?

all suggestions welcome

thanks

San Jose Museums:

A day trip to San Francisco could involve visiting Pier 39/Fisherman's Wharf, Ghirardelli Square, Golden Gate Park, a trip over the Golden Gate Bridge to Muir Woods, especially for the time of year you'll be here when there is usually great weather and little fog. http://www.pier39.com/

I advise you pack food and drinks from a San Jose local grocery store to bring with you because it is very pricey at Fisherman's Wharf unless you go to In-N-Out Burger
