Not an area known for tourist hotels. It can be an very interesting area with street murals, great Mexican food & an area in transition.

It seemed that the crime rate/violence was on a downturn in this area until recently when old gang rivalries exploded resulting in 3 shootings. Hopefully this was an aberration as I do love this area for walking.

San Francisco is so compact that if what you want to do is visit the Mission district you don't need to stay there. I, personally, don't know of any good hotels in that area.

We usually stay in Union Square and from there can easily get to where we want to go, either by a short Muni ride or by walking.

if you like b&b stays, look at A Country Cottage on 5 Dolores Terrace near Dolores & 17th bbsf.com/InnDB/Content/showInn.asp?InnId=1

(MUNI bus lines nearby are #22 Fillmore-goes through Lower Haight and to Pacific Heights & Marina District and to Potrero Hiill, #33-goes through Ashbury Heights to Haight Street and Inner Richmond or to Potrero Hill, J Church - goes to downtown/Union Square)

forgot to add that A Country Cottage is in Mission-Dolores district, the nice area near the park which is great for picnics and viewing the city from afar. Also great for walking to the trendy restaurants and walking to the Castro district.
