Suggestions for Thanksgiving

Hi, I'm in SF next week for a solo week of laid back tourism supplemented by light carousing and listening to music.

Does anybody had any suggestions for thanksgiving? I live in London and I want to avoid the Xmas day look of tourists wandering between closed attractions and closed restaurants wondering what's going on

I would go dinner at the Garden Court in the Palace Hotel or possibly the Ritz Carlton.

I don't think dining in a swanky place all by oneself is particularly celebratory. For solo travelers, unfortunately, Thanksgiving is one of only a few holidays in the US where everyone packs off to grandma's whether they like it (or her) or not.

In the "Top Questions" there is a great thread about what to do when traveling solo. On Thanksgiving, you may have limit yourself to self-guided walks (no SF City Guides that day). However, you will likely find many of the shops in Chinatown open.

If the weather is nice, the Marina Safeway (big grocery store on Marina Blvd and Laguna) is open (I'm about 90% sure) in the morning. They have an acceptable deli. Grab a sandwich and whatever and walk along the bay to Crissy Field. Walk about 1/4 mile along and there is a pretty stand of pine trees. There are some benches underneath them. Toast your luck at not being at granny's while enjoying the view of the Golden Gate Bridge!

Knuckles Sports Bar at Fisherman's Wharf is having a 3-course Thanksgiving special for $25 12pm-9pm: …sfgate.com/san-francisco-ca/events/show/891… http://knucklessportsbar.com/ - in all seriousness, you'll make friends with locals and visitors if you want to dine/drink there; on the screen you can check out football American style!

If you want to watch a marathon of people in costume in Golden Gate Park, very early as in 8:00AM early, this is the annual Turkey Trot: http://www.turkeytrailtrot.com/2009/ and course map: www.usatf.org/routes/view.asp?rID=254588
