Take #31 bus at Main/Mission to the end of the line at Balboa/Great Highway. Transfer to #18 northbound for short ride up the hill, or just walk it.
N Judah streetcar from Embarcadero Station OUTBOUND to 46th Ave/Judah. Transfer to the #18 northbound to the Cliff House.
Maybe do 1 then the other back.
Fare $1.50 each way. Can't get any cheaper than that. If you have a Muni Passport, it's already paid for.
You can also walk 2-3 blocks to Fremont and Market Streets and catch a 38-line there to the last stop, which is one block away from the Cliff House. The difference with the 38 and the other lines is that once you get off, you walk DOWN to the Cliff House, other than walking UP to the Cliff House. Once you get off at the last stop, walk towards the stoplight and then walk down the hill, and when the street curves left, you'll see the Cliff House on the right.
Cliff House sounds interesting. Is it worth the effort to get there and once there if you have only 2 days in San Francisco? What would be the best agenda.
We loved the Cliff House best of all the restaurants we went to during our week stay in S.F. 10/16 - 10/22.
We took a taxi from down by the Ferry Building on Embarcadero and it was $29.00 each way. Food was outstanding and the views are incredible. Greatest photos I took on the trip were from here at sunset.
Make a reservation definitely, and request a window table even if you have to wait for it in the cocktail lounge as we did.
Follow the experts advice on the bus out here and you'll have the money for lunch or half the dinner bill.
My personal favorite was the black pepper pasta with bay prawns.. Outstanding !!!
They have a web-site that will give you a pretty good idea of layout and menus. Do a google search for Cliff House - San Francisco and you will connect.
We're coming back in April 06 and our first stop will be the Cliff House..
Hope this helped. Enjoy ....
We were really disappointed with the Cliff House in June. We were there on a Sunday though which is really busy for Brunch but waited for an hour for a table which didn't materialise and then ended up eating at the bar. Food was good but not great. If you were sat at the window though, the view might compensate.
Depending if you have a car, it may be worth going to check out. If you're planning to check out Golden Gate Park, the Cliff House is near the west end of the park, so you can walk (if you really like to walk) or take a bus there. If you're driving around and you're visiting places like Golden Gate Bridge, the beach, or Haight-Ashbury, you can drive out to the Cliff House after checking out those places.
I always think Cliff House is worth a visit for first timers to The City.
In the past we have taken an early bus out there and had breakfast at Cliff House or the other place (name escapes me at present) and then walked down the hill and through Golden Gate Park.
You come out at the other end at Haight Ashbury which is always fun to explore and have lunch at Cha Cha Cha.
Last time we were at Cliff House for lunch (couple of months ago) the Crab Cakes were the best I have had for ages .
We were dissapointed by Sutro Towers (not sure about last word), the new name of the cliff house. The meals were not bad, but small and not outstanding as they should be for the high price. We felt ripped.
