What's your budget? What part of town do you want to be in? Did you review the Top Question about Fisherman's Wharf vs Union Square and The Embarcadero?

And ... sorry to throw so many questions back at you, but ... there are hundreds and hundreds of excellent restaurants in town. What type of cuisine? Again, what type of budget are you on?

Nob Hill hotel on 835 Hyde Street @ Sutter will make it necessary to take public transit (sometimes with a transfer) to get to attractions including Union Square, Ferry Building, Fisherman's Wharf. You are limited to the number of transit options.

Hotel Fitzgerald on 620 Post Street @ Jones and Taylor is more central and closer to Union Square, closer to affordable restaurants and easy to get public transit (either a cable car or the MUNI #30 & 45 buses) to Fisherman's Wharf, underground MUNI trains on Market to either Ferry Building or to other parts of the city west of Powell Street. you would want to walk south of Post on Powell Street to get to Market. Below Post on Jones or Taylor can lead you to the Tenderloin when you get below O'Farrell Street so if you walk down Taylor don't go south of O'Farrell, rather turn left on O'Farrell. There are good restaurants that are cheaper for lunch and dinner on O'Farrell and on Geary St. between Jones and Taylor.
