Best coffee places to try in SF?

Hi I'm planning to visit SF in June with my gf and we want to taste some of the best coffee in town. Any suggestions? Thx!

Blue Bottle is some of the best. Although they are at the Ferry Building, I like the little kiosk (more like a garage) near Civic Center in Hayes Valley.

Ironically, the Castro Cheesery. They got their start with cheese, but have been doing coffee for 25 years.

It's a hole in the wall place right next to the historic Castro Theater. It smells like coffee heaven when you step inside.

It's not expertly branded like some of San Francisco's other coffee mainstays, but that's a bit of why it's a special find. They've got beans from everywhere - Jamaica, Cost Rica, Yemen, Tanzania - and especially Hawaii.

There are coffee places in all of the inner (and some of the outer) neighborhoods of San Francisco. I don't know if you really want to travel for coffee places, but these places are good for different reasons::

Four Barrel Coffee--375 Valencia near 15th--A favorite of coffee foodies, with varietal coffee and the like. Ritual Coffee further down Valencia is another such place, but it feels too too to me.

Tartine--18th & Guerrero (one block west of Valencia)--Tartine is mostly a fabulous French bakery, but they also have good au laits, espressos etc. It can be quite crowded.

Cafe Trieste--Vallejo & Grant Sts., North Beach--This is the original Trieste, the great North Beach hangout. They have several branches now around San Francisco and Berkeley, but they just ton't have the same ambience.

Crossroads Cafe--699 Delancey St., which is the continuation of 1st St. in South Beach. Fairly cheap coffee, a little bookstore within the cafe, outdoor seating run by people from Delancey Street Foundation who are turning their lives around. And bagel and lox too. What more could you ask for?

Agreed with Blue Bottle. Go to their Mint Plaza location to check out their $20,000 coffee machine!

Four Barrel Coffee is good too.

Personally I like Philz better than Blue Bottle. I swear they put something in there to get people hooked. I heard it's cardamom, but I think it's probably crack. (just kidding). Several locations to chose from.

MisterChinn, you stole my Starbucks joke... ;) They MUST put crack in their coffee. What else could it be?

Thanks for all the useful information in this post. I'm saving this one for my next trip.

Heh heh... Mailgirl... Starbuck's is watered down cheap crack compared to Philz!

(this is wrong on so many levels...)

I vote for Philz. Their coffee is better and the atmosphere is downhome and friendly.

(remembering you're a science teacher of some type) this is more than a simple case of hydration. You're talking about the chemical substitution of a P for the C and K.

How about taking some of the best coffee, and a San Francisco original back home with you? Visit Graffeo Coffee on Columbus Street in North Beach. They don't brew or serve by the cup there (you can cross the street and go to Mario's Bohemian Cigar Store who uses Graffeo beans) or make any of those fluffy mocha-frappa-chai-vente-grande-bulimic-pornographic coffee drinks, but have been selling beans that make you want to curl up in the bag and sleep in for the rest of your life since 1935. No "varietal coffee" (ouch, that one made me flinch.....) here, just Dark Roast, Light Roast, or a water-process decaffinated, all great.

PS - If you turn into a Graffeo addict you can also get your fix in Beverly Hills.

Agreed with Blue Bottle, Philz, etc. but for a tourist experience, have a cup at Cafe Trieste in North Beach. If you're lucky, you might see Paul Kantner of the Jefferson Airplane/Starship in there (like I did last time).
