touring san francisco

Hi,

We are a family of 4 adults who are going to be in san francisco at the begining of july. We are only going to be there for 2 days. alcatraz is a must but we would also like to see the best of the city attractions, would it be better to go on an organised bus tour or just make our own way about.I know traffic might be a problem. If possible advice on recommended tours would be a great help. many thanks

Alcatraz certainly is a must, another must is booking it on line before you go,night tour is an eerier experience but doesn't run every night, wear something warm as,even tho you are going in July it can get pretty cool down by the bay.

On our first time, like yourselves having limited time,we booked a bus tour thru our hotel reception which gave us a pretty good idea of most of San Francisco,it's a pretty compact place & has good public transport so with some homework you could do it yoursel.

Most TA posters are likely to advice,if you have a choice, against having a car in the City,it's not really needed & if nothing else your hotel is likely to sting you for parking.

snae is absolutely correct about booking Alcatraz in advance. Some night tours in late June are already sold out. The official booking site is www.alcatrazcuises.com Make the reservation *now.*

There are a variety of tour types and operators. Guided tours: Mr. Toad's, Extranomical and Dylan's all get good mention here.

There are also hop-on/hop-off tour options. There are two different ones but I doubt there is much difference between the two.

You can use SF's public transit system to get around as well. For that there are passes available which provide unlimited use of all transit. You would likely only need a one day pass.
