Want to walk fun and exciting streets. Which ones and where?

Going to SF this upcoming weekend with gf. Can someone suggest streets or neighborhoods with shops and sights to visit?

Also, where should I park my car and use public transportation to get around? I heard driving downtown can be challenging.

thank you!

There are lots of paid parking lots etc. If you are staying in San Francisco places like Columbus Motor Inn offers free parking if you are staying there...

The usual - Union Square, Fisherman Wharf area is good to walk around.

In addition, here is a web site describing other places with shops etc...

Are you driving here from LA? If so, you should consider parking at a BART station. Assuming you drive up 101, your best bets are the San Bruno, Colma, and Daly City stations. If you are driving up Highway 1, your best bets are Colma and Daly City. If you are driving up I-5, your best bet is the Dublin/Pleasanton station.

Parking is free after 3 PM on Friday and you can leave your car overnight until about 2 AM on Monday morning. If you need to park Monday-Friday, you will need to buy a day pass or a long-term parking pass, depending upon the specifics. See http://www.bart.gov for details.

Haight Street (both upper and lower) and Valencia between 15th and 24th if you're artsy, Union Street and Chestnut Street if you're mainstream, Castro Street for the gay scene (and some cool shops and restaurants), Columbus through North Beach, Stockton through Chinatown, Irving around 7th, the malls in Japantown. Walk the Embarcadero for views (turn left on Jefferson and go all the way to Fort Mason - walk along the cliffside path. If you're a good walker, walk along the Marina all the way to Chrissy Field (no shops, but gorgeous sights).
