What's the food like at Pier 39

How's the food at Pier 39? Which restaurant would you recommend? I'm thinking of having seafood. Which would be a better option? Thanks!

The food in the Fisherman's Wharf area is generally over-priced and underwhelming. Go to nearby North Beach to eat, not at Pier 39.

Puter is right ... don't eat at the Wharf nor Pier 39. Way overpriced. These aren't the places that local go so, unfortunately, they aren't aiming for repeat customers.

There are some great seafood places in town: Sotto Mare in North Beach, Sam's on Bush at Belden, Tadich's on California near Battery, Hayes Street Grill on (wait for it) Hayes Street near Gough (pronounced gauwf).

None of these restaurants are very good compared to what you can find outside Pier 39. You're paying for the view and location, not the food.

Everyone's comments are right on for the area. I do occasionally eat at Scoma's because I love their cioppino and I have been with visiting friends to Alioto's and I like both of them well enough, but they are very overpriced and the suggested alternatives are probably a better San Francisco experience.

Sal hit my favorite places, SF classics all. If I had to pick one it would be Tadich Grill.

If you are determined to eat on the Pier. Personally, I think Pier Market isn't bad. It's a seafood and grill. Clam chowder is good, but canned. Nothing's fantastic, but nothing is terrible. Prices aren't bad considering the location, most things are around $17-20. Take out is cheaper, salmon quesadilla is particularly good. It has a casual friendly vibe and is located smack dab in the middle of the pier. http://piermarket.com/

But, yeah, food on the Pier is nothing special, considering you're in a city with world renowned chefs from all over the world.

Wow, thanks everyone! Lucky I didn't make the mistake of going there for seafood. I'll look into the places recommended.
