Your "must eats" while in San Francisco

Clam chowder? Oysters? Crablegs?

I keep hearing that SF is a food lover's hot spot. So, I'd love to hear your opinions on the best local meals (and where to get them) in the city.

(As you can see, I love seafood...but I'm open to everything)

Actually the cioppino at Sotto Mare is highly rated too. It's not an oyster place though- for those I'd head to Hog Island Oysters in the Ferry Building.

Also, don't miss the Ferry Building's Farmers Market on Saturday mornings.

Although I have a severe allergy to raw oysters and so can't speak for them, Sotto Mare does consider itself an oysteria. http://www.sottomaresf.com/

But it's definitely worth a stop for fresh seafood.

I'd add to the excellent list that sfimporter posted the following:

http://blogs.sfweekly.com/foodie/sfoodies_92/

- carne asada burrito at El Farolito in the Mission district (actually, any of the Mission burrito stores that has a line of people waiting to eat there)

- Sam's Sundae at Bi-Rite Creamery

- Gialina in Glen Park for the wild nettles pizza (or the amatriciana with the fried egg on top)

I almost forgot. It is not a food, but make sure to experience the original Irish Coffee at Buena Vista.

Actually, in SF Irish Coffee can be considered a food. Herb Caen used to point out that it contains all 4 basic food groups: Sugar, Fat, Alcohol & Caffeine.

Sitting here at work, reading about the cioppino and burritos is making my mouth water. Thanks for the suggestions. I look forward to trying out some of the Chinatown places as well.
