Honeymoon Trip in June, 2012 - What should we see?

My fiance and I are planning on going to San Francisco for our honeymoon in June, 2012. What should we make sure to see? What's not worth the hype? Is there a day trip that is within driving distance that would be worth it to do? Thanks to anyone who responds! :-)

Yosemite National Park is about a 4 to 5 hour drive from San Francisco so maybe you could go over there and stay one or 2 nights. June is an excellent month to go there because the waterfalls are at their full flow. Big Sur, the coastline south of Monterey/Carmel, is beautiful and romantic. Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, just south of Carmel, is the most beautiful place on the California coast, in my opinion.

You should see the obvious beautiful sites in San Francisco. For instance, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Cable Cars, Coit Tower, Ferry Building, Painted Ladies, Pier 39, Ocean Beach, Golden Gate Park, Japanese Tea Garden, and there are museums, Fisherman's Wharf and you can sail on the bay. You can go north to Napa/Sonoma wine country, south to Santa Cruz and Carmel By the Sea. Or, east to Lake Tahoe or Yosemite.

It is all about what you want to see and do and what interest you.

A day trip to the Napa/Sonoma area would be nice if wine interests you. If you want to experience some beautiful coastal scenery, check out the Carmel/Monterey area. Boulevard, Farallon, Grand Cafe and the restaurant at the Ritz-Carlton would all be great places for meals in San Francisco. Make advance reservations on www.opentable.com Have fun! :)

There is also Chinatown, North Beach (Italian neighborhood) and yummy food.

Depending on your budget a few of the high end restaurants are Gary Danko, One Market, and and lots more. Wayfare Tavern is reasonably priced and beautiful. There is Perbacco, Sotto Mare, Sodini's, Slanted Door and more.

If you have time, take the ferry to Sausalito and have a very nice stroll down by the bay and take in the little shops and restaurants.

It's important to know how long you plan to be here. You'll want to make the most of your time and not be driving long distances for just a quick visit somewhere.

If you have a week in San Francisco, you have more options than if you'll only be here 3-4 days. If you're staying 2 weeks, you could go to Yosemite for a couple of days, and also to Monterey or Napa overnight.

I'd suggest only one or two longer trips, for the sake of relaxation, and focus on enjoying more in a smaller area. For instance, you could rent bicycles and ride across the Golden Gate Bridge (hopefully on a day when the frequent summer fog takes a break), hang out in Sausalito for a bit, and take the ferry back, and that could take much of a day. Ditto for a drive to Muir Woods and then Napa or Sonoma.

Be sure to check on parking fees wherever you're staying. Hotels at Union Square, the Embarcadero, Fisherman's Wharf, and the rest of the busy northeast part of the City charge up to $40 or more a day--the cost of a Motel 6 room in much of the U.S. If you rent a car, we typically suggest keeping it only during the days you want to go out of town or to outlying parts of the City, because you can get around well on public transit.

There are wonderful day trips to be had north of the city. After crossing the GG Bridge, you can head to Stinson Beach, Pt. Reyes, Samuel P. Taylor State Park, sample fresh oysters at the Drake's Bay or Hogg Island oyster farms, or head up to Guerneville, rent a kayak, and find a secluded spot along the beaufitul Russian River (after stopping at the Korbel winery along the way for champagne and picnic supplies). Have a great honeymoon! My wife and I sometimes pinch ourselves when we realize we live in a place where people choose to spend their honeymoons...
