40th Anniversary, Feb. 26, where can we get a good steak?

We are coming to San Francisco for 6 days for our 40th anniversary, and I would like to know where we can get a good steak.

Bobo's is insanely good (http://www.boboquivaris.com/); also pricey.

If you can 'settle' for prime rib, The House of Prime Rib is a classic (http://houseofprimerib.net/home.html).

Other great steakhouses are Harris' (http://www.harrisrestaurant.com/) and Ruth's Chris (http://www.ruthschris.com/)

Enjoy!

I agree with tdubb except I heartily dislike Ruth's Chris (and besides, it's a chain -- San Francisco isn't the place to eat at a chain restaurant).

Morton's just got a terrible review in the SF paper. I dislike Alfred's although it has a defender on this board.

If you want to talk insanely expensive, Alexander's is it! But it didn't get a very good review either.

Epic Roasthouse gets good mention here ... I haven't been.

I love Bobo's and I don't think it's any more expensive than Harris' -- which is also very good.

Izzy's in the Marina is more reasonably priced and is a fun atmosphere (although perhaps not the romantic style you may be looking for on your 40th).

I'd go with either Harris' or Bobo's. Harris' atmosphere is very old school. Big leather banquettes, very comfy, very quiet. Bobo's is a bit more eclectic but still nice.

If you're okay with prime rib (I don't totally understand the distinction since I'm not a huge meat eater), I'd go with House of Prime Rib. It's classic San Francisco and a lot of people like it for special occasions such as a 40th anniversary.

I'm a big fan of Harris' steakhouse - I've enjoyed 2 wonderful meals there in the past couple of years. I would avoid Ruth's Chris; as mentioned before it is a chain and the quality of meat they serve there doesn't measure up to that served at other steak restaurants in the city.

Thank you all for the suggestions! We have Ruth/Chris's here in Louisiana and I am not a big fan.

House of Prime Rib sounds very good, and I will check out Bobo's.

Thanks again!

I would also like to know if Sports Coat and tie are required at Bobo's or House of Prime Rib?

oh, no. SF is a very informal city -- I've seen people at the opera in ripped jeans. Wear whatever you like. At both Bobo's and House of Prime Rib you will find people dresses to the nines as well as perfectly informally.
