Street and Transit Map

I'm planning a trip to SF for 6 days in March and I would like to get a SFMTA street and transit map so I can plan our routes around the city. Unfortunately, they do not sell them online. Any ideas how I can get one in advance so I can get an idea of how to navigate the city? I purchased a citypass so I can get around to all the attractions. I'm willing to pay a local to send one to me...any ideas?!

Amazon.com sells something called "Streetwise San Frnacisco" a laminated foldable map with transit routes marked on it.

IMO a visitor doesn't really need the MTA map. It's huge -- can be converted to a poncho should the need arise :) -- and most visitors only need a small section.

I have the Streetwise map referred to above. The lamination is nice for the wear and tear aspect but it's a bit too busy and it's difficult to write on. Especially if you want to mark routes, I'd recommend a paper map.

You can just print it at home. The large map is conveniently broken down into 4 parts for you to print on 4 sheets.

Go to http://www.sfmta.com and download the maps there. Almost all third-party transit maps I have seen either (1) are vastly limited in the scope of information provided and/or (2) are outdated and therefore not useful.

As noted above, the SFMTA map can be needlessly complex. IMO, Bay City Guide produces the best non-detailed Muni map. It shows almost any line a tourist would want to use and is regularly updated. See here: http://www.baycityguide.com/maps/maps.html

There's a public transit trip planner at www.511.org, and even a mobile ap at m.511.org. Looks like it could be very handy.

The Trip Planner serves a different purpose from the system map. The Trip Planner gives you precise directions from Point A to Point B. The system map shows you the network of lines, gives you an overview, allows you to look how different lines and destinations work. You'll probably want to use both.
