First timers to San Fran in Sept 2011!

Hi guys would be grateful if I could ask a few questions covering a few topics.

Firstly, is it worth taking travellers cheques to cash? If so, how difficult is it to cash (i.e. are they accepted anywhere else except banks?)?

Are taxis metered? Am asking as we will have to take a taxi to a house we are renting.

I am going with my husband and my mother, and we have booked to go to Alcatraz. Have you got any other must see places to recommend while we are there in Sept?

What about restaurants? We love eating seafood, grill, and enjoy wines and whisky.

What does the weather tend to be like?

What about the surrounding cities external from SF - worth renting a car for a day?

Any other tips would be great - thanks! :-)

No, do not bring travelers checks. Cash points (called ATMs here) are on every corner and are far more convenient to use if you need cash. Travelers cheques are not generally accepted outside of banks. Credit cards are used more frequently here than in other countries, so cash is only needed for bus fares, snacks, miscellaneous small purchases.

Yes, taxis are metered.

Weather in September is among the best of the year, generally. In the low 70s during the day, sometimes a bit warmer.

The most popular destinations outside the city include Muir Woods (a Redwood forest), the wine country to the north, and Monterey/Carmel to the south.

I'd get a prepaid currency card. We got one when we went to Canada last year and its so much better than travellers cheques or taking lots of cash. You pre load the card with money and then use it just like a debit/ credit card but avoid all the fees that your bank will charge you:

I used AMEX t/cs bought at M&S currency bureau in Nov 2009. I did have to carry around passport. I did find that I used my credit card more than before. In 2005, I had a pre-paid card and it was also widely accepted.

We are also visiting in Sept and hope whether will be dry and bright and warmer than at home.
