Public transportation to Yosemite Valley from San Francisco is either

-- Amtrak. One ticket. Amtrak bus to Emeryville, train to Merced, YARTS bus to Yosemite Valley.

-- Try to convince a tour operator to sell you a seat in the bus/van one way and perhaps another one back to SF. Extranomical, IncredibleAdventures, and Grayline are worth a try.

Tours: GreenTortoise, Trek America, Intrepid SunTrek Some are very inexpensive camping tours, and some involve cheaper lodging.

United Vacations UK do a coach tour which covers all 3 destinations but it is quite expensive. We did it in 2003 when it was called Best of the West. It also visited Las Vegas, LA (Anaheim), San Diego, Bryce Canyon and Zion.

There were Australians on the tour so it may be available from NZ.

Be advised that it is over 1000 km from Yosemite to the GC. If you take public transport (bus and/or rail) to Yosemite, there is not an easy way to travel on to the GC, other than to go back to SF and fly to Phoenix. Public transport to the GC can be done from Flagstaff or Phoenix AZ (to the South rim only). Las Vegas is a major airport that is midway between Yosemite and GC, so you might have some luck finding a tour from there. But avoid tours that go to the "West Rim" of the GC - it is a tourist trap. Can you rent a car? It might be your best option.

From SF or LA you would take Amtrak's San Joaquin train to Merced and a YARTS bus from the Merced station to four stops in the valley. Go to Amtrak.com and download the San Joaquin trains schedule. There are 6 trains a day with 4 YARTS connections. The Merced/Yosemite Yarts connections are noted on the Amtrak schedule. The Grand Canyon is difficult to get to. On Amtrak you can reach the canyon from Los Angeles on the Southwest Chief (train # 3). It's an overnight trip to Williams or Flagstaff Arizona. Download the Southwest Chief schedule from Amtrak.com You should also download a map of the western/southwest US. These locations are far apart. The only tourist location in the southwest that is more difficult to get to is Las Vegas (go figure).

Hi, we're driving around Cal for ten days before going to San Francisco. The plan is to go to Santa Cruz, then Cambria--maybe Santa Barbara, and then north. Is it too busy at Yosemite at the end of July? What about Tahoe? We're pretty flexible.

Thanks

Hi again jenn

Same suggestion. Make your own thread rather than hijacking someone else's. Be sure to share info about your travel group. Let folks know where you're starting.

Jenn, PacificNWFamily is correct; you've just changed the subject to what you want to know which has nothing to do with tenpintakapuna's original question. Start your own thread. You can also type your topics into the search engine to see if they have been answered before.
