4 days..

Only 4 days of work for me this week, and then we are on our way to your city. Let's see..

..got our reservation at the Chancellor, got our

" layers", got warm jackets, got preprinted BART passes, got tickets for Alcatraz..

Day 1 we will be the jetlagged kiwis making their way through North Beach, Lombard Street ,down to the waterfront and back, working hard to get some melatonin so that we sleep well that night!

Thanks so much to you all for the friendly, approachable and helpful advice given on this forum.I've learned such a lot and hopefully we are (semi-) prepared .We are really looking forward to our visit, and will post a report when we get home.

Considering that the pineal gland secretes melatonin at night with darkness as the trigger, you should probably consider adding a couple of black bags to place over your heads during your Day 1 walk. These bags should be well ventilated, as if you plan to use Lombard Street to get to the waterfront from North Beach you'll get a pretty good aerobic workout (not to mention having to zig-zag around the break in Lombard St at Telegraph Hill). Heading either north to either Francisco or Bay Streets, or south to Broadway will put you on a lot leveler ground.

Alternately melatonin is sold in most drugstores ("chemists" is your term I believe) as an over the counter dietary supplement. There's no need to resort to the method Hunter S. Thompson described in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas to obtain a supply.

Yes. Have a wonderful trip. You have done a lot of great planning.

We will try to keep the weather nice for you, so you might not need your "layers" Today was a glorious fall day in Santa Cruz. Rain is predicted for the middle of next week, but don't worry, it won't be a deluge and probably won't happen. Weather forecasters like to prepare us for the worst, so that if it doesn't happen we are happy.

If it happens and they didn't warn us, we think they are clods.
