Need help- I goofed!

My brain has been in so many places getting ready for this trip to San Francisco TODAY, bringing two kids, leaving 2 kids at home with grandparents.... I knew I'd forget to do something and awoke this morning realizing although I'd picked out the tour I wanted to do (Dylan's tours) that I did not actually BOOK it, and now they are all booked up! They are booked both Wednesday (when I'd hoped to go) and Thursday. I could potentially do Friday, but I'll have to get dh to check his meeting schedule again (he's at work right now which is why I can't do that now).

My biggest reason to do the tour was to get the kids to Muir woods, but I did think the overview of the city would be helpful, and would keep me from feeling like we had to get everywhere ourselves because they would at least have had a glimpse of the different areas. And for some reason my girls will just sit and listen to someone else giving a tour for hours, though when I tell them interesting facts about places, I'm deemed "boring"!!

I found these in a brief search-

Tom's muir woods tours

Extranomical

muir woods shuttle tours

silver lion service

golden horizon

Any opinions on these? I think I pulled most from the Things to Do reviews list. I hate to ask this and not spend more time doing the legwork myself but we are supposed to leave soon. I will search as much as possible in the airport, but my fear is that I won't have enough internet time being on the plane for so long today!

Thanks so much for any insight!

Toms gets frequent mentions on the forum as being good. Extranomical is a bigger company with tours to a lot more places and with from what I can see a good rating for their Yosemite and Napa tours. For a city tour also check Mr Toads if Dylan's is not available

I'm not at all a tour-taking person, but if I were to take one, I'd either (a) go for a specialist, or (b) try to get something as self-paced as possible as I hate to be herded. For (a) and Muir Woods it's probably Tom's. For (b) some kind of hop-on hop-off.

Tom's is entirely Muir Woods .... it's not a city tour. And it drops you at Sausalito to take the ferry back -- which isn't a bad thing, just wanted you to realize.

I've never heard of the last three.

Bon voyage!

Thanks guys! We made it thru security with some time to spare, will try to tackle this with my 20 minutes left of Internet. Boy do you realize how much you rely in it when you are about to lose it!

Caffiend- I hear you about tours. I typically like to do it myself, but thought this would be the easiest way to get us to Muir woods especially since it may just be me and the kids (ie no navigator!). It's also the most interesting phenomenon- my kids in Westminster Abbey (or the like) on our own- bored. Put a guide in front of them or especially good are those pre recorded headphone tours- and they listen to the last detail!

What a truly awful thing to call some poor tour guide. I mean they already have to get up and put on a bush jacket and pith helmet every day to go to work, and there's not a wildebeest for miles, at least one that's not behind bars (and no, that's not a slam on the inmates of County Jails 1-5 nor the afternoon bartender at [deleted] bar).

I call it tube-feeding syndrome. Put a set of headphones on a susceptible individual or plant a talking head in front of them and they automatically flip into "receive" mode, regardless of the content. As a parent you can use this to your advantage -- shoot short video clips or assemble audio in your most perky, content-neutral tones telling them "do your homework -- it's fun" or "clean your room -- earn valuable brownie points". Then front-end the material with a few minutes of stuff to get them into receive mode, play it back at the appropriate time, and boom.......

Method is patent-pending, of course.

A ferry ride back to the City from Sausalito is relaxing and enjoyable, and in the afternoon hours, against the commute flow, so relatively empty this time of year (summer is another story, with all the bicyclists....). The Golden Gate Transit Ferries also have a really pathetic "bar" on the boat, but enough to get your coffee fortified to help you cope.

We are taking Tom's Tour april 30th. I talked to him the other day on the phone no payment needed up front. He does small groups so hopefully he waill have an opening.

Cash or check only.

I'd throw out the plan and try something different. Maybe a visit to the Exploratorium or California Academy of Sciences. Or just a city tour.

Correct me if I'm wrong - but a "Muir Woods Tour" is really shuttling you over and letting you hike on your own after a short blurb about the area. I can't imagine a tour guide walking you through a trail - but I could be wrong.

Sounds like Alcatraz would fit your bill for your kids - but they can sell out.

Thanks everyone!

Caffeind- brilliant idea about loading my commands ("do your homework") on the headphones! I was just so pleased they were learning something, I did not even extrapolate to other uses.

So I have calmed down now. Went a little overboard on the freaking out when, in the midst of doing the last bits to get ready for our 10 hour trip to get here I realized our day 1 plans were caput!

I have decided for day 1 that we will tour ourselves. My first thought was to take the cable car up to Washington square to either Mama's or Liguria for breakfast, then a walking tour of North Beach, including climbing up to Coit tour and seeing the views and hopefully the parrots. Then either head to Fisherman's Wharf , or instead go to Chinatown. Then we need to end up at ferry building at 5:45 for Slanted Door reservations.

Then I may do a half day Muir woods tour with Tom later in the week.

Thanks so much for the suggestions!!
