San Francisco weather

I'm trying to plan a trip to take in Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon at the end of May/beginning of June and was hoping to take in San Francisco too. I have heard mixed reports about the weather at that time of year and wondered if anyone could advise if its a good time to visit?

It is really hard to predict the weather out here. Junes are usually foggy. Springs windy, may even rain. Bring layers and warm coats for evenings. But we may have a heat wave...

It's always a good time to visit San Francisco, no matter what the weather.

Any time is a good time to visit SF. Year round temperatures are generally between 50°F and 70°F, with some higher and lower thrown in for fun. And of all the months, May is one of the best times for SF because the winter rains have generally stopped and there isn't as much fog as in the summer so you get better views.

Are you aware of the Memorial Day holiday weekend in the US? Memorial Day is the last Monday in May, so the 'holiday weekend' is May 25-28. Depending on where you're going, you may find higher prices or bigger crowds.

And I'll second Kibblesmom's reply: "It's always a good time to visit San Francisco"

You'll need those shorts in Vegas, though :-)

Agree year round is a good time to visit SF. ;-)

That said, about all you can do this far out is plan on "normal" weather. If you want some averages base on long-term-data, check out the SF weather link (or something like that) located at the extreme lower right of the forum screen. That's about all you can figure on when you're months away.

When you get closer (a week or two) you can start looking at forecasts and figure they will be reasonably accurate.

Not sure what mixed reports mean. On the TA page for San Francisco you can scroll to the bottom and see the average temperatures for anytime of the year. You can dig deeper and see what the temps were last year and get the facts

I think a lot of visitors aren't prepared for San Francisco summers. You can really have amazing weather and see people in shorts and then 2 or 3 o'clock hits and the fog rolls in and the wind begins whipping. Then it's time for long pants and warmer fleece and such. However, it's this natural air conditioning that allows us to live without air conditioning.

I'll second SFI on his view, in that weather here is ever changing, and you'll find micro climates within SF, not to mention the surrounding cities, but the constant fixture of Summer here is the afternoon/evening Fog. Fog burns off usually by 10am and returns at 2-3pm like clockwork, and aside for wind is usuallly 60 degrees in June.
