Jay: Please define "Best"? Price? Crispyness? Not so crispy? Spicy? Best, jay, is really like beauty, in the eye(or mouth)of the beholder. You must realize that best for you may not be best for me. I personaly like the fried chicken from Albertson's deli. Moist, very crispy, a fine flavor and a great price. Chuck...

Of course there hasn't been an Albertsons in the Bay Area since February 2007 when Save Mart, who had purchased Albertsons LLC's Northern California and Northern Nevada assets in November of the previous year, rebranded the stores under the time-honored Lucky name.

Actually, Safeway's fried chicken isn't bad at all, considering that it's "supermarket deli chicken."

I prefer the legs and wings. Chicken breasts normally tend to dry out in cooking, and Safeway's process seems to make them very dry; a couple of times I've had to cut them up to use in soup or cooked dishes. So now I only buy their fried chicken in packages of all dark meat. The drumstick, thigh, and wing pieces are flavorful and not over-salted, juicy and tender inside and crispy outside.

There is place called 99 chicken somewhere in Santa Clara an hours drive from SF which is great. No waiter hovering around you but the owner does take a photo of the patrons and the wall is full of the Polaroids.

Why -- because I like it and it comes with salt and a salad bar and some spicy sauces

When people start singing the praises of supermarket fried chicken, that ought to tell you about the quality of Bay Area fried chicken.

The best local fried chicken I ever had was at Nona's Kitchen in Pacifica, but they went out of business.

In the Bay Area? Ad Hoc in Yountville (Monday nights and Sunday brunch).

In San Francisco, I like Farmerbrown's Little Skillet and Wayfare Tavern.

My daughter makes me take her to Popeye's every week!

When a fresh batch comes out at Safeway deli, we sometimes get there too and have found surprisingly good as well.

It goes without saying that I'm not a great fried chicken afficienado since I like Safeway's too (and agree about the dark vs. white meat). But my cat loves it!!

1300 on Fillmore does a good fried chicken. And the rest of their menu is very good as well. http://www.1300fillmore.com/
