Where to stay in San Fran, hotel recommendations please?

We are travelling end June and spending 4 nights in San Francisco and would like suggestions on where to stay, not going to have a car so need to be close to public transport. We are a family with two children aged 7 and 11. Any specific hotels, areas would be helpful.

We like the Donatello.

Very large room.

Room has small kitchen with micro wave.

Close to Union Sq and transportation.

If you post your budget you will get more suggestions.

To the right of this page is a "Top questions about SAN FRANCISCO" section that contains the topics, " Hotel: Union Square or Fisherman's Wharf?" and " Hotel : Embarcadero or Union Square?". They are good places to start.

Most locals would recommend Union Square first, The Embarcadero second, Nob Hill third and Fisherman's Wharf dead last behind other spots. Fisherman's Wharf grates on most locals because it is such a schlocky, touristy, misrepresentation of San Francisco and so many tourists stay there because somewhere along the line they've heard "it's the place to stay".

Union Square and The Embarcadero have better access to public transportation, better hotels (in general) and better shopping and restaurants that locals patronize.

About all Fisherman's Wharf has is a couple of hotels that are well set-up for families, but I am not sure the areas negatives are overcome by that.

Look at the topics to the right and help us with these questions. What do you have in mind for a budget? What specifics would you like in a hotel for the family? What activities do you have planned or in general what type of activities do you like?

Thanx Scottca, we are looking favourably at Union Square after reading posts as you suggested, great transport links, looked at Omni Hotel, The Handlery and Parc55, they look good (reviews are not bad on any) and the rates are within budget.

Omni and Parc55 are both a cut above the Handlery and well located hotels with good amenities.

You also might check out the Nikko and Marriott Marquis. They have pools and my kids always loved those when we traveled.

I find the Omni more of a Financial District location which, while right on the California Street cable car line, isn't as convenient as the other locations.

The Donatello, mentioned before, is very good if you are traveling with children, not just because of the efficiency with fridge, microwave, etc. but also because the rooms are large and include a sleeper sofa besides a king size bed.

You don't have to crowd the room with rollaways, for example. It is a very nice hotel.

We loved the Chancellor having stayed there two weeks ago but wouldn't really suit the OP as would need two rooms which would work out more expensive than the others with large rooms suggested.
