Slight Ferry Strike (May 1, 2012)

Not likely to affect many, but good to know should travelers be seeking to take a morning ferry:

http://goldengate.org/news/May1_2012.php

Service will be suspended until 2pm. (Feels just like Italian trains!)

Golden Gate ferries travel to Larkspur and Sausalito.

Blue & Gold ferry service is unaffected, but they travel to Tiburon (among other places) rather than Sausalito.

So anyone biking over the bridge shouldn't expect to catch a ferry back to the city until after 2pm.

In general, this is a May 1 movement....

If people have heard about an Occupy Movement, they have asked people not to go to work but to show solidarity for the movement since its May Day

May Day is also known as International Workers Day

…wikipedia.org/wiki/…27_Day

As such, besides the ferry, you might see activities occuring at other areas in San Francisco and California. Local news will cover any you might want to be aware of in regards to this activity....

Not a lot of new yet though except that there is a general call to have a general or slight "strike" on May 1 only.

MUNI could strike - but how could we tell the difference? ;-)

The toll takers will also be slower than usual....which I just heard on the local news at 5:00 today.

So in short it might be harder (or slower at least) to get from Point A to Point B tomorrow.

As such, you might want to do something more local to your hotel....

or just realize you might risk some longer delays than normal.

Regardless, have a good day in San Francisco if you are here May 1 for your vacation.

How many tourists use Golden Gate Transit ferries?

This is much more of an issue for local commuters.

This has NO impact whatsoever to transit within SF (Muni).

Lots of tourists bike to Sausalito and take the ferry back. This would affect those visitors directly.

Most tourists use the Blue and Gold ferry to Fisherman's Wharf. It was my understanding that this impacted Golden Gate Transit only. Those ferries go to the Ferry Building and are not as frequently used by tourists.

Actually, most tourists use the Golden Gate Ferry. The boat accommodates many more bicycles than the one B&GF uses, and at least as the schedule currently stands, GGF runs much more service at the times tourists travel.

That being said, in my experience many tourists don't make it to Sausalito until around lunchtime, so they should be relatively unaffected by this "slight" strike.

P.S. Traffic going across the Golden Gate Bridge was not affected by any slowdowns or protests today. The striking union had considered it originally but backpedaled a couple days ago. Thus the ferry strike instead. Traffic was free-flowing when I went across the bridge around 11:30 today.
