Pier 41 is in the middle of Fisherman's Wharf. You can walk over to Beach St. and catch the F-Market & Wharves which will run along the Embarcadero past the Ferry Building and then close to Union Square.

Or you can walk over to Taylor and Bay and catch the Powell/Mason cable car.

Walk a bit further to Hyde and Beach and catch the Hyde St. cable car.

Here's a cute little 3D cable car map that might help: http://www.sfcablecar.com/routes.html

You could also take the Sausalito ferry from the Ferry Market Terminal Building pier. The F-line trolleys stop right in front of the building, and you're less than 2 blocks from the California Line cable car terminus.

We have the option ( 2 different vendors ) of taking the ferry from Salisluto to either Pier 41 OR THE Ferry Building.

Is there any advantage to arriving at Pier 41 vs:The Ferry Building ??

Thansk so much , we leave tomorrow for the West Coast, very ecited!!!

They are about a mile apart.

The Ferry Building is a fun place to visit -- a variety of food markets and stalls. It's also closer to Union Square.

But if you want to go to the Wharf, Pier 39, the Cannery and Ghirardelli Square, Pier 41 is a lot closer.

As you noted ferries from Sausalito go to both places.

Is the ferry building (where you get the ferry to sausalito) and the ferry building marketplace both at the same address/location?

If you want to ride a cable car, you are much more likely to be able to board the California Street cable car from near the Ferry Building. I would take the ferry to the Ferry Building, take the California line up to Grant Avenue, then walk through Chinatown and North Beach to Fisherman's Wharf. Take the ferry from Pier 41 back to Sausalito. (Or reverse, if the timing works out better, but the walk as described is slightly downhill rather than up.)

A lot will depend upon which ferry leaves at the time you are in Sausalito. The Blue & Gold Fleet and Golden Gate Ferry schedules don't have too much overlap. The ferries don't fill up, so feel free to buy tickets once you arrive in Sausalito (rather than in advance).

Once you are in SF, you can see all the same attractions. The difference is what order you see things. From Pier 41, for example, you would want to start in Fisherman's Wharf and work your way down to North Beach, Chinatown, and Union Square. From the Ferry Building, you would work your way up from Union Square to Chinatown, North Beach, and Fisherman's Wharf.

There are three different cable car lines. The California line is easiest to board, and it terminates near the Ferry Building. This will be your best option if you primarily interest is riding a cable car, not necessarily get to the tourist destinations you are trying to see.
