Can anyone suggest a hotel at least near the wharf for a family of three, The reviews I read are not very good.

My husband and I have stayed a few times at the Holiday Inn (not Holiday Inn Express) and it has always been good. Clean, friendly, accommodating, quiet. I can't comment on any of the others but I know there's a Raddison, possibly a Marriot and there is the Argonaught which looks pretty spiffy. Personally I've never been prepared to pay Argonaught prices though.

Any recommendations might depend on what you want in a hotel? Are you looking for 5-stars, pools, room service, view of GGB, free wi-fi? Do you need two rooms (assuming "family of three" is mother, father and child) or will your child stay in the room with you? Also it will probably be influenced by your budget? What are you prepared to spend per night?

Locals don't generally recommend the wharf unless you have young children, but personally I like it. I know it's full of hideous tourist crap but I like to be able to walk to Aquatic Park and see the sunset behind the GGB (when visible). That said, I will concede that it's not brilliantly convenient for public transport if you want shopping or the BART.

If you haven't already seen them, on the right-hand-side are a list of top questions for SF including a few on hotels and the pros and cons of their various locations. These may help your planning.

The Argonaut is very highly rated so they have good reviews. The Tuscan Inn has always been spoken of well. The Holiday Inn Express I have always heard good things and The Hyatt at Fisherman's Wharf is nice. Did you look at any of those?

If some one put a gun to my head and MADE me stay at Fisherman's Wharf, I'd choose the Argonaut or the Tuscan Inn.

Not to forget the Fairmont Heritage place which has 1-2 bedrooms suites and a price to match their grandeur.

I would have said Tuscan or Holiday Inn Express The Argonaut is a bit on the expensive side, although if you have the money...

There's an unfortunate tendency among some locals to browbeat anyone saying they want to stay at Fisherman's Wharf. It has a very touristy, carnival-like atmosphere that some people hate and others love. I'm personally not crazy about FW, but everyone I bring there from out of town seems to really enjoy it.

It's your holiday, so you get to decide where to stay.

How about the Hilton. Stayed there a few years ago and it was nice.

What is your budget? Why do you want to stay at Fisherman's Wharf? Will you have a car (hopefully not)? We recently stayed at the Hilton Financial District, since my wife was attending a conference there, and took a trolley to FW. If you aren't going to spend a lot of time in the wharf area, I frankly would not stay there.
