San Franscisco -Why are hotels crazy expensive in September?

We went to SF once before, it was in May a few years ago. We stayed at the Mosser for a good price ($85/night). We want to go again this year, staying either in Fisherman's Wharf or Union Square (NOT Tenderloin.) Everywhere we check now is super expensive - like a Best Western costing $300/night or The Wharf Inn for about the same. Can anyone tell me why that is? Is September their high season? Can anyone advise on a decent place to stay - thinking $150-175 at the most in either of the two above mentioned areas. Any suggestions would be welcome.

1. The economy is much better now, and everything in SF is more expensive.

2. America's Cup.

3. Oracle World, which is the biggest convention of the year and sucks up every hotel room in SF and the near suburbs.

If the Wharf Inn is $300 it must be Oracle World .. change your dates by a week or so on either side. If you're stuck traveling during this period then I would suggest traveling outside SF ... Oracle World, as Simba says, sucks hotel rooms in a big way.

According to SFTravel (what used to be known as the Visitors and Convention Bureau) Oracle World is estimated to need over 21,000 hotel rooms. There are only 33,000 in the entire city.

So everyonen else is fighting over 10,000 rooms. Crazy expensive? It's called supply and demand.

If you don't need a private bathroom, try the San Remo Hotel on Mason Street near Fisherman's Wharf. A European-style pension, it is adequate, and I believe their rates are under $100/night.

Oracle World primarily and America's Cup secondarily. Consider alternate dates, or try staying outside of the Union Square, Moscone Center, and Fisherman's Wharf areas.
