Sorry but I'm not sure how to "link" this to the Trip Report thread. Anyway, we stayed in SF for 1/20-1/23 @Grand Hyatt in Union Square to celebrate hubby's 70th. Great hotel in the perfect location. They gave us a Bay View - wow!! Plus, they sent up champagne & chocolate strawberries for his birthday. (this was all done by SusanW, who posts here on TA all the time. She is one of the conceriege's at the hotel, thank you Susan - you made our stay in SF so special) Had breakfast 2 mornings @ Laurie's, which is 1/2 block down from hotel, great 50's diner with very reasonable prices for a good breakfast. Had 1 breakfast @hotel, good, but way over priced, no surprise for hotel restaurant. Walked to China Town, also up to Knob Hill. Ate lunch at Mocha (our conceriege told us about this place) which is on a little side street about a block from the hotel - wow, what a terrific little deli/restaurant with very fresh food!! Very enjoyable! Weather was perfect - especially for January, we enjoyed upper 60's to a wonderful 75 on the Monday we went on a private tour, with Knight Wine Tours, (who picked us up @ hotel), to Napa & Sonoma. He went over the Golden Gate Bridge & stopped in Salsilito (sp?), wow what a beautiful little place that is!! Wonderful tour - Stan is a delight. He took us to some out of the way wineries, plus to a little Italian deli/food store where we purchased freshly made olive oil, among other things!! We visited 3-4 wineries, had a great lunch @Bouchon in Napa Valley, and ended up @ Mumm's for champagne, before heading back to SF. Stan even drove us down Lombard Street - what a treat that was! He has even mailed us pictures he took of us! I would recommend him to everyone!
We had dinner at Waterbar, which was very good with a nice view of the Bay bridge. We also had dinner @Bistro Aix, which a DE here on TA recommended. The food was very good, the only problem with this restaurant is the distance/cab fare from our hotel, which is no fault of the restaurant. Had one dinner in room after our long day in Napa. Had a great lunch at Fog Harbor on FW. Wish we would have known, would have loved to have dinner here, food was terrific. Next time!
Did the "rock", hubby loved it - I couldn't wait to get off the island, so very depressing! Never realized how small those cells are - OMG! Can't understand how the wives of the guards & wardens ever lived on that island!!! Anyway, it is a "must see" once. Did a city tour with Golden West Tours, recommended by Dylan of Dylan's Tours, as he was booked the day we wanted to tour. Wound up being a private tour, as everyone else had cancelled, so that was to our advantage. Saw all the wonderful sights of SF, including Twin Peaks, which scared the heck out of me, not one for hair-raising turns or heights! Saw the painted ladies, the Golden Gate Park, Haight, some beautiful homes, including the mansion of Danielle Steele, great 3 hour tour!
So, thank you all again, for all your help - you have a beautiful city! Would love to be able to assist anyone if they ever come to Chicago! (PS: Come in the summer please, lol)
