You cannot smoke inside in any public building nor near an open doorway. You cannot smoke in any park (including Union Square). I believe those are all the restrictions.

The smoking ban in SF is likely one of the strictest in the country.

Not in public buildings, not in bars, very few hotels still have smoking rooms available, not in restaurants, not in public parks or at farmer's markets.

On public streets you may but not within x number of yards of a building entrance. So you can't just hang around the door of a bar and light up.

Basically, you can't smoke anyplace indoors* other than your own private space (if allowed by the hotel or apartment building). Outdoors smoking is allowed except in areas where the smoke might bother others -- parks, doorways, movie lines, etc.

(The indoor ban is a state law, I believe, while the outdoor regulations vary from city to city.)

*There is an exception for a bar where there are no employees and the owner allows smoking -- this allows for cigar bars which are owner-operated.

You won't see many cigarette smokers in CA., but in SF you'll smell lots of weed. LOL In all seriousness, everyone has given you excellent answers.

Generally if you keep moving there is no problem. Otherwise you are supposed to stand right at the curb for a smoke. In the Haight you must smoke something other than tobacco. Well not really bit it seems so.

Smoking ban is a joke.

Everywhere downtown people smoke and any immigrant areas they smoke like a chimney.

Lot of second hand smoke!

No smoking in your car if there are children in the car. State law.

It's not so bad. You can smoke underwater. There's lots of water. There's San Francisco Bay; there's an entire ocean; there's even the handy Vallliancourt Fountain.
