September itinery - comments please??

Hi all

Me and my boyfriend are coming to SF in September as part of a longer West Coast USA trip and would be grateful for some local and/or experienced input to make sure what we are doing is do-able and for any other comments. We have 3 full days and will not rent a car.

We will arrive from the UK on Saturday 7th September at 1.35pm. We are staying at Hotel Stratford and plan on taking BART from the airport to the hotel. Aiming to arrive by 3.30pm?

We havent really planned anything that afternoon/evening as not sure how jet lagged we will be. But will maybe just explore Union Square for shopping & dinner as it is close by.

Sunday 8th September:

10.30am – Alcatraz tour approx 2 ½ hours (need to book tickets)

2.00pm – walk to Filbert Steps, climb to Telegraph Hill & Coit Tower

4.00pm – walk to Lombard Street (crookedest street)

Walk up crookedest street and take cable car to back to hotel.

Chinatown – Chinatown Gate at Bush Street/Grant Avenue

Monday 9th September

9.30am - Bike ride – from Pier 41 (Blazing Saddles or similar), across Golden Gate Bridge, to Battery Spencer & to Sausalito.

Have lunch in Sausalito and ferry back to Pier 41 (Blue & Gold - 30 mins) – return bikes

Afternoon at Fisherman's Wharf

Train down Market Street to Embarcadero to the Ferry Building & see the Bay Bridge

7.15pm – Baseball at AT&T Park (tickets booked - SF Giants vs Colorado Rockies)

Tuesday 10th September

Take Muni metro to Castro and bus to Twin Peaks

Walk to Clayton Street and take bus to Golden Gate Park

Golden Gate Park – possible segway tour. If not, wander through the park

Take bus #5 from Fulton Street (north of the park) to Alamo Square:

-Painted Ladies - Postcard Row

Evening: Union Square

Wednesday 11th September - pick up car 8am and leave SF down Highway 1 on route to LA. We are stopping on route at Cambria overnight.

Would be grateful for any comments on our SF part of our itinerary.

Hayley :)

The shops in Chinatown close rather early so if you want to wander through any of those, make time during the day.

As long as you realize that you are going to be doing a lot of climbing up the Filbert Steps, you should be ok. You are then planning to climb up to Lombard street as well -- that is fine but again a lot more to climb and as long as you active you should be ok.

I must commend you for planning your vacation. we get a lot of folks who ask us to plan it for them. hats off to you for doing that

Americas cup sailing race will be on in the SF Bay when you are here so you may get a chance to see that and there will be larger crowds on the bay and in the ferry and they may move some routes around I would imagine when the races are on in the afternoons (I guess that is when the races were held)

By chance (design) you'll be at Alamo Sq early evening on a weekday. Great place to watch all the local dogs out for their evening walk. Good lighting for that Painted Ladies postcard photo, too.
