Driving from San Francisco to Las Vegas via Yosemite

Planning to drive from SF to Las Vegas via Yosemite in April 2014. Does anyone have suggestions for places to stop en route? Would love to see Death Valley too. Possibly travelling by RV and would love to camp but otherwise by car and motel/lodges. Have approx 4 nights to travel through.

Hi Jackie K, and welcome to TripAdvisor forums.

As your question is really about a driving route in the state of California, I recommend you repost on the California state forum page. (This page is just about San Francisco.) Note that Tioga Pass will be closed so we'll share ideas about the route around the southern end of the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

When you repost on the state forum, be sure to share info about your travel style & travel group.

In April, you will not be able to go all the way through Yosemite from west to east, because Tioga Pass, the eastern road, will be closed for winter. It typically does not reopen until late May, or even later if we have a wet winter. The only roads over the Sierra Nevada that you can be 95% sure of having available are US 50 and I-80, which are both long detours from the direct route. They are beautiful and scenic, but will add maybe a half day of travel time and ideally an additional overnight stop.

In winter, you have to go out Yosemite from the southwest toward Fresno and Bakersfield, and go around the south end of the Sierra Nevada to Death Valley. From Bakersfield, there are two principal ways to get to the east side of the Sierra, and a couple of variations on how to enter Death Valley. None of these routes have anything near the variety and grandeur of Tioga Pass and the entire Hwy 395 route.

Sorry. However, Death Valley should be beautiful then and may have wildflowers if we have a wet winter and the right timing on the spring warming.
