Car rental

We are flying into San Fran on Thursday August 1st and plan on renting a car on Saturday August 3rd and driving down the coast to San Diego. When I first starting looking at prices a couple of weeks ago, a price for a mid size SUV for 7 days was $86/day. I discussed this with my husband and after much going back and forth we decided it best to rent a minivan as there are two adults and our 2 (young adult) children and suitcases traveling. We plan on picking car up in Union Square area where we are staying and dropping off at San Diego Airport. So our next thought was to rent the minivan until we arrive in San Diego on Wed. August 7th and down grade to smaller/less in expensive midsize SUV for the remaining days.

Problem, looking on line right now prices seem to be more than doubled on Kayak and sites like them.

Am I doing something wrong? Did I wait to long to book?

Would appreciate any suggestions/info etc.

Thank you again,

Patty

1. Re: Car rental

Car rentals are supply and demand based and there is no way one knows if the rates wil go down especially in Summer with the high demand. While some companies offer a better deal with a pre-pay, I have never rented one by paying in advance but pay when we rent so we always book our rental and then check rates and change only if they go down.

Are you using coupons for rentals from major airlines or costco or do you have some affiliation to a company or organization that can get you a better deal. Look at rental car momma or other companies to get you a coupon. Most of the times one way rentals are expensive so you may need to do a one way rental and then change cars -- that would be the best way to go

Check different companies and also check SFo rates. It is just like buying a plane ticket. Need to look at different options
