Oops. I guess you missed the Top Questions about SF

Why not have a car in SF? What if we cannot return it? (Added March 2013)

sanfrancisco.bestparking.com has spots close by that charge about 30

You may not need them but what the hotel charges will include in/out privileges. Outside lots will not.

If SF is the middle of a road trip you may be stuck with the car but it's worthwhile to at least price out turning in the car and re-renting.

We always park in the lot on the corner of O'Farrell & Mason. It happens to be just across the street from the Hilton. It's very clean and safe. Never had an issue. It's $32 per 24 hours.

Sal's observation about in/out privileges is worth noting (as is the one about turning in & re-renting). You need to consider whether you'll be using the car while in SF and if the answer is yes, (somewhat) how you expect to use it.

If you're going to just park the car for your whole stay, then the savings with a daily rate at a different location could be real and significant (but be sure you know *exactly* how they charge, I've seen at least one garage - although not in SF - where the daily rate only applied to the FIRST day, after that when when to their hourly rate, so if you didn't leave at least once a day it got expensive real quick!).

If on the on the other hand you intend to use the car in the city (generally not recommended, but certainly worthwhile for somethings), especially if it will involved leaving/returning to the garage multiple times a day, the non-hotel garage could certainly end up being more expensive than the $50 the hotel is charging. (This will all depend on the garage's rate structure and the details of your auto usage/parking.)

That's my $.02,

hlo

I have seen many of the lots around the Hilton having signs to entice hotel guests with specials with in/out privileges The rate will be in the 30 range as Suzie mentioned. So do look at that info before you park as the final rate will depend on your usage as others have said

Belo's right about nearby garages offering unlimited in/out, but consider when you'll be accessing your car. If late at night, I'd be careful about the location of the off-site garage. There are some located deeper into a seedy area called the Tenderloin that I'd not want to be walking to/from late at night. (By the way, the O'Farrell/Mason garage would be fine...)

If you don't need the car all the time get rid of it, also be aware there is a lot of construction on Stockton for the new subway, so traffic in the area is a pain, with traffic rerouted around the closures.

The Mason/O'Farrell garage is going to save you a few dollars from the hotel charge and is convenient. When you read rates be aware that they probably do not include the 15% tax.

As others have said, you don't need, or want, the car in the city, but if you cannot dump it during your stay, then so be it. If you are keeping it only for day trips out of town, don't do that....only rent it for that/those days.

This garage requires you to drive up the ramps and do your own parking. (Hopefully it isn't too full. You may end up on the 6th level searching for that "last" space.)

There is another, just as convenient, which we have begun using when we drive into the city for the day, which is on the opposite corner on O'Farrell and Taylor. This is valet parking and saves us time. Since the Hilton takes up that whole block of O'Farrell, it is just as convenient.

DH cannot remember if the price is comparable to O'Farrell and Mason, which means that it was not outrageous.

Good luck

We will be staying at the Hilton later this year & I'm also looking for parking options.

Would parking at the Powell St. Bart station be a viable idea? From the map, it doesn't look like a long walk, and at $3/day, it sure beats the hotel rates. If that's a safe area and not too far of a walk, we just might do this.
