Bay Bridge to close 8/28-9/3/13 around Labor Day Weekend

"Top transportation officials voted today to open the new eastern span of the Bay Bridge by Sept. 3, the day after Labor Day. They recommended a five-day closure to complete construction of the span from the night of Aug. 28 to the morning of Sept. 3."

The Bay Bridge connects SF to the East Bay cities: Berkeley, Oakland, and also to points East. so if you plan on driving to Yosemite, you will be impacted by this. The alternative would be to use the San Mateo Bridge.

Others going to OAK airport or O.co for a baseball game can still use BART, but expect it to be more crowded.

Amtrak service connecting SF to Emeryville seems like it will be impacted. One alternative would be to purchase tickets from Emeryville. Then take BART to MacArthur station and take the free shuttle to the Amtrak Rail station in Emeryville. http://www.emerygoround.com/schedule-maps

Other impacts and workarounds/detours that visitors should know?

Perhaps folks going from SF to Lake Tahoe? Depending on where they start, I suppose north to GG Bridge then Richmond Bridge. Also some mapping programs route folks to Napa/Sonoma via East Bay too.

Folks coming back from Yosemite or coming or going to SoCal will also have to use the San Mateo or Dumbarton Bridges to cross the bay to connect to I-5.

For those using domestic airlines, maybe opt for Oakland (OAK) or San Jose (SJC) instead of SFO, especially if you have to return a rental car, to avoid the bridges (and if the Bay Bridge is closed, you known the other ones will be busier than normal).

That's gonna be a mess. Glad it will be back open for the opening 9er game on the 8th otherwise traffic on the 101 would be insane.

For those who need to make Amtrak connections at Jack London Square -- an option is the ferry . sanfranciscobayferry.com/route/oakland/sffb

Are you staying in SF proper? The car service will likely go via San Mateo Bridge. If you are asking about BART, that option is still available but will be very crowded.

Busy but not impossible. BART is anticipating volume and will have extra trains. As long as you can maneuver your own luggage you should be ok. Be sure to read the connection shuttle info. There is no BART stop at OAK proper like at SFO.

darkbeer,

Why would one choose OAK if staying in San Francisco, since the Bay Bridge will be closed ?? There would be no reason to avoid SFO since you do not have to cross ANY bridge to get into the city.

What are you thinking???
