No and no. Stay in the city and use Muni buses to get around. Don't drive.

No. Do not consider it because of the location.

If you make a wrong turn in that area, you might not make it back home.

No, no, and NO.

The Alpine Motel "sounds"" like a good location because it is right on the country line, and practically across the street is San Francisco, The place itself is cute, set on a hillside by itself. Decades ago, the nearby Old Bayshore Highway was the main route between San Francisco and San Jose, and this was a fine location for travelers to stay. But the freeway has bypassed it and the neighborhood around it is no longer a desirable area.

The location itself is remote from downtown and most visitor attractions, without lots of public transit options, not convenient to visitor-appropriate restaurants or other services, and not far from some of San Francisco's most crime-ridden public housing ("council houses" in Britain; not sure what you call them in Singapore), This is what Chumley was referring to; things like drug trafficking and drive-by shootings are part of life there. A couple of other motels on Geneva Avenue attract the "hourly rental" crowd. Even though there is some public transit there, I wouldn't feel safe waiting for a bus.

I feel sorry for merchants who try to make an honest living in areas like this, where the neighborhood falls apart around them. But I would suggest this place for only two types of guests: people attending events at the nearby Cow Palace (arena and exhibition hall), or who want to shut themselves away for a week to write, meditate, sleep, or hide from an irate boyfriend or girlfriend, are not interested in going anywhere or exploring, and are OK driving 300-400 metres to a fast food joint for dinner because they don't feel safe walking.

tks so much for the kind reply...

actually, we have a flight to catch on a weekday afternoon at 12.55pm to go home... we were concerned that if we stayed in the city itself, we might be caught in the traffic and missed the flight and that would be disastrous... hence, considering to stay somewhere nearer to the airport to facilitate going home on the last day... have even considered the travelodge near airport as a possibility and from there, we will drive to the city itself every morning....

but i get your point... and yes, will definitely avoid daly city ...

the reviews of the alphine inn in this forum r really good and nothing was mentioned about the safety issues... which is why i thought it is a good alternative...

I think you'll have no trouble taking a taxi from downtown San Francisco after 9 or 9:30 am and arriving at SFO (just 13 miles away) in plenty of time for a 12:55 pm international flight. If you're really concerned, leave at 8:30 am.

You'll have lots of trouble commuting from outside SF into the city with 3 children for three days.

** "...have even considered the travelodge near airport as a possibility and from there, we will drive to the city itself every morning." **

No, don't do this either! A vacation is not a time to commute, but to relax and enjoy yourselves and make the most of your time. We have a Top Question in the upper righthand corner: "Hotels: Where to stay when visiting San Francisco." There are countless reasons why you should stay IN the City, someplace near downtown. Most of us wouldn't consider Fisherman's Wharf our favorite, but it's close to visitor attractions and most children enjoy it. On the other hand, as PNWF says, commuting back and forth each day from an airport hotel to the City with kids would be a nightmare.

For a midday flight, there shouldn't be any problems getting to the airport from downtown with plenty of time to spare.
