hotel to stay for 49ers game at Candlestick

Im working on getting a hotel to stay in San Fran.. neverbeen there keep that in mind. Am coming in thursday for a sunday game day. WHERE TO STAY? Wont have a car.. what are our options.. want to see all we can while there of course.. from Texas- I know you dont necessarily want to help other teams fans. but chose this venue knowing Candlestick's last year and able to make the dates. So looking forward.. so- what transportation do we use to game? Where do we stay for best access that also allows for going to some of the sites especially Fishermans Wharf :) HELP is appreciated tremendously. Need to get our reservations. Already have flight and game tickets.

You could easily stay in any of the 3 main areas popular with visitors (Union Square, Fisherman's Wharf, Lombard Street). See the Top Question on the right for details on each area. I think the Union Square area offers the easiest access to the transportation to the game... the 79x Ballpark Express for about $12 per person, round trip. sfmta.com/news/press-releases/sfmta-encourag…

Be aware of new bag restrictions at the stadium - 12x12x6 clear totes only (plus a small, hand-size clutch bag).

I think you should be OK seeing that the 49ers are playing the Texans at home this year, if it was the cowboys it might be a whole other story. Be advised the buses will be very crowded and after the game you may get some lip particularly if the 49ers lose. I would also suggest you look at another thread about getting to the Stick after a late morning arrival at SFO. I looked at the MUNI map of their service back and fort to the Stick and it was not very understandable. You may have to make specific inquires after you arrive about where stops are located and the like.

I would point out that the linked to article claims the fare is the regular fare. It sure was not 40 years ago and I very much doubt it is now. I think in the other thread it is stated to be $12-14 round trip each, I personally do not know.

I don't think anyone on any of the forums we have been on would not help the fans of an opposing team. It is a game for Pete's sakes. So do read the Top questions on where to stay and as Susan mentioned the SF MUNI has buses to and from the game . Find a hotel and we will be happy to help you get there and back safely and please take time to come and see our wonderful city and sample our great food

The Muni to the 79X is very easy to navigate.

I don't think Fisherman's Wharf is walking distance to a Candlestick Express stop so not as convenient at Embarcadero or Union Square. The 79X originates at Sutter and Sansome and that's an easy walk from Union Square or Embarcadero.

(I don't know what Muni did to their website. They've removed the page with the Candlestick routes and I can't get them to come up on 511 or nextmuni. Anyone know?)

Oh my gosh, JAH, you're right... the article (dated August of this year) has the fare information wrong!! What the heck is up with Muni these days -- the new website is unusable, the map linked in the article is incomprehensible, and when I did find this article, it's wrong!!!! I've emailed the contact name to see if this is a new policy or an error. (The earlier articles I could find about the service didn't mention the fare, so who knows, maybe it's a new policy....)

If you payed extra 40 years ago why would you not do so now.

I actually spent some time studying that map and found it like you incomprehensible. Streets not marked stops generally not indicated (except for the T) hard to decipher for someone who knows the City and has actually used the Stick express let alone someone from out of town.

I also had difficulty navigating the whole MUNI site. If I remember correctly the last time I did it was difficult but possible with effort. Now it appears to be very mixed up.

Hello from a fellow Texan! We'll be at Candlestick this weekend for the Green Bay/49er's game (I'm a GB fan, he's the SF fan). Everyone here has been super helpful. We're staying in the Union Square area and will be taking the Express to get to the game.

SFSusan brings up a really GREAT point - do not take a regular purse with you or you will be denied admission. We found this out the hard way at the Texans/Saints game last weekend. New rule, like SFSusan mentions - you can only carry the clear bags or a small sized clutch - think wallet size. We reached the stadium entrance and had to trek all the way back to our car to drop the bag off.

Have a great time!
