Caltrain station - public transport.

I'm taking the megabus into san fran and it stops in Caltrain station. What public transport can I take to get to city center/fisherman's wharf/union square. Is there anything to see around Caltrain station?

Well there is SF MUNI which runs all streetcars buses and the cable car so there are plenty of transit options from the Caltrain station to get around town . With luggage I would suggest a cab or without luggage you can take the K or N street car and switch to the F street car at the Embarcadero station (the N or K will. E underground and the F above ground and get to FW. Do read up about SF Muni passports and what to see and do in SF in the TOP QUESTIONS

Around. Caltrain there is AT&T park, design galleria and shops open to the trade for design. Lighting and furniture stores.

Thanks for that. There are 8 of us and we have all been to sf, we will be there for about 8 hours, is it worth getting a day pass each for the muni? We don't want to hire a car and deal with parking

The basic fare on Muni is $2.00... A one day Muni pass is $14.00... So, unless you are going to ride a cable car (at $6.00 regular fare) its not really worth it... Just have dollar bills available for the fare... (no change given)

With 8 hours you are somewhat limited in how far you want to go... From Caltrain the 30 Stockton bus will take you through Chinatown and North Beach close to Fisherman's wharf and the Marina district... (or return you to Caltrain) One warning... the 30 Stockton does get hyper crowded... The N-Judah streetcar will take you around the Embrcadero going underground at the ferry building then up Market Street (it does not continue to Fisherman's wharf) and out to the panhandle... close to Golden Gate Park and its museums

Depending on how much luggage you are carrying, you could just head up towards the ball park and Embarcadero (the waterfront), the ferry building etc... until you get tired or run out of time... then take Muni back...

If anyone has a special interest ask and we will try to give you directions there...

Ok thanks, thats great advice. We won't have any lugggage, just a day trip out. Probably go and have a crab melt and clam chowder. Any places you can recommend for that, the last time I went to the Pier to have that. All of us has seen the sights in SF so we probably go and do some shopping.

Is it also possible to get down to the pier from where the cable car stop is in downtown without taking the cable car?

Thanks

Crab season starts around November end through spring. Clam chowder is not an SF speciality except for boudin which markets it as such. There are great seafood places in SF - did you read the top questions on seafood ? If after sitting in the bus for 7 hours, you want to walk why not walk along the Embarcadero to the ferry building for oysters or other seafood and as mentioned you can take the f wharves streetcar to FW

If you go to union square to shop there are buses(30,45, 8X) that go to FW but take the F on market to FW

Do you mean Pier 39? None of the cable car lines serve a pier, but the historic streetcar line (the Muni F line) does run near Pier 39.

Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf are tourist traps, and since you've been to SF already, I don't see the point in going back there. I presume you've also been to Union Square since you've been here before.

With that in mind, you could go to the Ferry Building, Golden Gate Park, or the Mission District instead. Have you been to any of those places? The Muni Metro N-Judah line picks up next to Caltrain and runs out to Golden Gate Park (use 9th & Irving stop). The N and T lines both go from Caltrain to the Ferry Building (use Embarcadero station). Etc.
