What pier are you talking about?

Here's a map that may help orient you. It shows the cable car lines:

The JW is a block away from Powell St where you can get either the PH or PM cable cars to the wharf area. The PH will make a short stop at the top of the crooked part of Lombard St and then end its line near Ghiradelli Sq a few blocks west of the wharf. The PM ends its line a couple blocks south of the wharf. There are alot of shops and some restaurants on Pier 39 and the wharf area. With eating a meal, shopping, maybe a bay cruise, or Alcatraz tour, you might be able to spend a day. There is so much more to see in the city and you didn't say the length of you trip you could get by with less time in this area. Look at purchasing a 1 or 3 day Passport to ride the cable cars & muni.

I would not spend all day at Pier 39, it will give you a very unrealistic view of San Francisco. Stroll through North Beach and Chinatown afterwards, go to the Ferry Building for a better and less expensive meal than you'll find at Pier 39. Etc.
