If you look on the right side of your screen you will see "Top Questions about San Francisco" (you can't see it if you re using a mobile device).

Click on this one "Hotels: Where to Stay When Visiting San Francisco (December 2013)" This gives you some idea of what is "there".

But as long as you asked......We are a 'mature couple' who live near SF and stay overnight there several times a year for theater. Fisherman's Wharf is colorful and busy. It is also noisy and full of buskers and cheap souvenir shops and underperforming restaurants. Union Square is the center of the city in that it has access to all of the kinds of public transportation, excellent restaurants within walking distance of its hotels. It is the "grownups" part of the city, if you will. The Embarcadero is also. Read up and have a wonderful stay....I just don't recommend Fisherman's Wharf, personally.

I totally agree with Puter in that Union Square is the place for you.

Have a good look at Top Questions as suggested and the hotels you might be interested in and come back to us with more questions.

Looking forward to hearing from you and helping you with your plans.

I agree with Union Square. Some of my favorites in the area (I prefer small/boutique spots) are (in no particular order): Prescott, Rex, Petite Auberge, White Swan, Monaco, Chancellor.

If you like the reviews and the location (which is fine) and have perused the information on their website, then , yes, it is a good choice. You might do the same with the others recommended by White Dahlia, as she knows them, their locations, and has been in them, even if not a guest.

You will have a great stay.

Puter, is correct I have not stayed at any of those hotels but I have had a number of friends who stayed at all of those hotels. I've seen rooms at the Chancellor (which Puter knows well), the Petite Auberge and White Swan.

But read all the reviews and find one that looks good to you. Of course, if you prefer new, large and modern hotels then check the Grand Hyatt, Marriott Union Square, Parc 55 and Nikko.

I've just booked the Rex (we are there in April) and we paid $610 USD for 4 nights inc tax which I thought was a great deal!

Good luck choosing a hotel. There seems to be a lot of choice!

That sounds a great deal , what website did you book thru ? We plan staying 5 nights in August and prices I've found range from US$1200 to $1600 depending who you book with.
