What neighbourhood should I stay in?

I'm looking for a good neighbourhood to stay in while I am in town a couple days early for a work trip. I'm using airbnb for accommodations.

The hotel I'm at for work is the intercontinental, South of Union square and north of Soma. I want to stay in a neighbourhood in a different part of San Fran so I get to see a totally different area while still remaining close to attractions.

Things to know:

-I will not have a vehicle but want to use zipcar to drive up to marin county the day I fly in

-I am going to see Alcatraz the second day so I would prefer to not stay in that area but be somewhere easily accessible to it.

For ease of commute to the IC I would suggest a neighborhood on the Muni Metro line: Castro, Dolores Park, Duboce Triangle, Inner Sunset. Or the Mission and use BART.

The neighborhoods on the north side of town have buses lines to downtown but they generally end on the north side of downtown which would mean a long walk or another bus to the IC.
