Pay As U Go / Pre Paid Mobile/Cell phone for our US holiday

Hi.

Starting in San Francisco and touring for a month so need a cheap basic phone just for calls texts to call family back home in UK.

Can anyone advise what is the best provider to go with for value for money / cheap UK call rate.

Would like to buy this within first day or two in Fishermans Wharf area. Can anyone recommend a store?

I'd say one of the nearest would be a drugstore called Walgreens. There will be a variety of "burner phones" to buy, including Virgin. Also tons of cheap souvenirs and snacks.

Here is the link to the closest store

As far as calls home, skype would be the cheapest option.

Yes, I suppose she/he could lug a computer around. Am I missing something here?

You'd still need something that could access WiFi

I suppose if the O.P. has a decent smartphone that is unlocked to bring along and could run a Skype application then it could be done that way rather than a computer. Sometimes the data rates (or while on WiFi) and the skype charges could be cheaper than phoning home through the normal phone company. It looks like Android has a skype app, though I've never used it.

Of course that means bringing their unlocked smartphone along from home if it compatible with US networks (probably T-Mobile or AT&T will be best candidates) and getting a prepaid SIM card here rather than a whole new phone. A cheap phone isn't likely to run Skype.

Tracfone, one of the major "pay as you go" companies does offer calls to the UK for the same price as a local call. You can find Tracfone almost anywhere basic phones are sold... There is a bit of a delay to set up the account, but sill a good deal..

The Safeway at 350 Bay Street may have them. I haven't been in that particular Safeway in years, but I see phones for sale at other Safeways all the time.

I've skyped from my iPhone from overseas on WiFi without any extra data charge. I imagine the iPad app would work the same way. Even without cellular. There are tons places around with free WiFi. Even, I believe, the little Parklet at the foot of Powell Street.
