May or July? Help us make a decision

I am planning a trip to San Francisco, Yosemite National Park, Sequoia National Park and Monterey area. We love to hike and would like to spend the majority of the time hiking in Yosemite. We are contemplating if Memorial day week or 4th of July week would be better. Is Yosemite mostly open for hiking end of May or would it be better to go in July? Will Sequoia NP be too cold in May? How about San Francisco and Monterey? Which month would you choose? Thank you for all replies.

Do you like crowds on three-day bank holidays? Yosemite and Monterey will be packed.

San Francisco on a three-day holiday, however, is better, as a lot of people go away.

Try for national parks and the coast of California on a weekday schedule, preferably in May before schools let out. There is often a two day stay requirement in Monterey for Friday and Saturday nights, too.

About 90% of your question is not about SF. And people wandering through the CA forum aren't going to look at this thread as the title doesn't that you're looking for info about anything other than SF.

I'd suggest you repost on the CA forum and post a draft itinerary as well. If you can do this trip at any time other than holiday weekends you'll encounter a lot less in the way of traffic and crowds in the National Parks.

Besides which, accommodation in Yosemite books up a year in advance. The likelihood of finding and snagging a cancellation over a holiday is pretty low. The Yosemite forum is a fact-filled place to check out -- start with their Top Questions (right side of screen, non mobile version of TA); there is a lot of info on accommodations there.

We are not too worried about the crowds since we are going for about 10 days so not just the long weekend. We are more interested whether wise. Will it be too cold in May for hiking in Yosemite, will the hikes be open? On the other hand I heard the waterfalls are amazing that time of the yr. Will it be too cold in Sequoia or at the coast?

Once again, you are asking questions that have nothing to do with San Francisco. Please go to the Yosemite and Sequoia forums for specific information.

Waterfalls may be problematic this year due to our mega-drought.

It won't be "too cold" on the coast unless you're looking for beach weather. SF temps don't vary that much through the year but we don't have a "summer" as most people think of it.

In both May and July, everything in Yosemite Valley will be accessible. In May, the high country may still be closed - it closes due to snow in the winter and they don't start plowing until spring. When it opens depends on the snow pack and how late spring gets going. The average opening date for Tioga Pass is May 29, and being a drought year, an early opening is likely. There is still a risk at the end of May that the high country won't be accessible. Weather-wise, Yosemite will be warmer in July.

For Monterey, there isn't much difference in weather from May to July. The average high is in the mid-60s both months, average low in the low 50s. Same with SF. In both areas, there is generally less fog in May though.

You can look up average temperatures on www.weatherunderground.com - lots of good information there.

The OP has courteously reposted in the CA forum. Responses better placed here: tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g28926-i29-k726408…
