1. Re: cable cars

www.sfcablecar.com has the 3 routes. Two go from Powell/Market to FW (two different spots) and one from near the Embarcadero to Van Ness via California -- so nope there are only 3 routes.

Do the Powell/Hyde line if you can. or you can look at the funky Irish/Indian pub called Kennedy's at the end of the Powell / Mason line.

Did you miss the info while reading the SF Forum Top Questions on MUNI and streetcars and cablecars ? Humm

Remember to get a muni passport as a few cable car rides covers the cost. The California line is usually quieter and it is fun to ride along to Van Ness and come back again. We often switch lines at Nob Hill and ride early morning and late night

Just to ride I suggest the California line. It's not crowded like the other two lines (they serve to tourist meccas of Union Square & Fisherman's Wharf). The Califfornia line does serve Embacadero/Ferry building, Chnatown, Nob Hill & points west.

All but a 100% chance you'll be able to board the next car.

If you're here during the summer or other peak season, and you want to ride either of the lines that go to the Wharf, try to ride before 9 am or after 10 pm. This will be the only time there aren't long lines along the route. Otherwise, as mentioned, the California line is much easier to board, although when riding this line you generally just travel up to Van Ness, turn around and go back (paying 2 fares) since there's not much of touristic interest along Van Ness.
