An afternoon and evening in San Francisco

Hi ,

We will be arriving at SFO at 2-30pm on the 22nd August. We plan to use BART to get into the City where we plan to spend 4 nights. We are looking at staying in Union Square and will cover some of the main sights like Alcatraz in the full days that we have there.

We want to make the most of our as stay so I just wondered whether anyone could recommend somewhere to visit for a couple of hours the afternoon that we arrive? Food, shopping, views, walks and museums are all things we enjoy.

Can anyone suggest any great seafood restaurant's?

Also any suggestions for car hire and where's best to pick a c as r up from if we the n head off to Yosemite?

Thanks in anticipation of any responses.

Farallon right in Union Square is one of our favorites for seafood in San Francisco. You can book an advance reservation on www.opentable.com and make special requests. We like to dine in the main pool room there. Enjoy your time in San Francisco! :)

I think a nice stroll around Union Square and then into Chinatown and over to North Beach would be nice for an arrival afternoon. Is this the day of your international travel? If so it's even better because you don't get too far away from your hotel and if you become completely exhausted the area is pretty easy to grab a cab and it would be a short ride back.

Also, once in North Beach there are all sorts of cafes (for coffee) or bars (for something stronger) if you'd like to rest a bit before taking the walk home.

Enter Chinatown at Grant and Bush and at Broadway cross over and head up Columbus and then back to Grant (Columbus is at an angle). You can criss-cross between Grant and Columbus as well. Once you hit Washington Square you're beginning to run out of the commercial section of North Beach.

If you are into tours, you might consider taking the two hour evening tour offered by Vantigo. Small tour company driving around the city in a 71 VW Van. I did it last week and Eric, the owner/guide was so informative and friendly. The van only holds 6 people - wine, beer and water were offered. It was such a relaxing and fun evening and reasonably priced - www.vantigo.com.

When we stay in Union Square, one of our favorite places to walk for dinner is E & O at 314 Sutter St, near Grant Ave. They also serve lunch.

Ferry Building. Definitely. Food, views, shopping, walking. Perfect for a couple of hours.
