SF to Yosemite - where to stay/visit in between

We expect to be in SF in July, and we're planning on heading out to Yosemite. Given the difficulty and cost of park hotels, we're looking for a spot between the two locations where we can stay for a couple nights, and even sight-see in the area. I don't know the area, but I'm not seeing a whole lot between SF and Yosemite. Any suggestions?

Humm it would be like suggesting people stay in Grand Rapids to see both Chicago and Detroit

Stay in SF to see SF and in YNP to see YNP it is not a smart idea to drive 2-3 hours in traffic each way

A car is NOT needed in SF and the top questions on this forum have budget hotels listed

Many people stay in Mariposa or Groveland to visit Yosemite, but this still puts you at least an hour from the park. If you're okay with all the back and forth, then you can start your search there. But it really would be best if you could find something inside the park. Given the distance, gas back and forth, etc., I would ante up and pay more to be INSIDE Yosemite than commute to it every day.

OK, so assume we plan on staying in the park, is there even a place between SF and Yosemite that's worth getting out and stretching our legs during the drive?

Most of that drive is through the barren, dry, hot agricultural San Joaquin Valley. Not much of interest to stop for on that route. Some TA's recommend stopping in some of the Gold Country en route. These small towns are nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and might make for a good place to stretch those legs.

It really depends on the route you're using to access the park.
